He should have atleast one fight with a top contendor before fighting for that title. That top contendor is clearly Thiago Alves. | Randy Couture shouldnt have fought Tim Sylvia
Rampage shouldnt have fought Chuck
They are trying to make a huge card for the New years show and I personally am pumped to see Penn-GSP 2 no matter the circumstances

Let him fight GSP in a non-title fight but he should not jump Alves who has clearly earned his shot at the belt I love BJ but if this is true it sucks balls imo

I agree that BJ shouldn't just be gift-wrapped a titleshot at Welterweight...but hey, money talks.
Still, putting that feeling aside, nobody can argue that this fight will be sick. I'm sure the New Year's card is going to o w n.

I want to see BJ move back to WW but I want to see it become a permanent move. I hate the jumping back and forth in weight classes because it ties up belts for too long at a time. With these guys fighting every 5-6 months, it's just too long between fights when they jump from one weight class to another.
Move Anderson to 205, move BJ to 170 and let's go. The UFC needs some fresh matchups and these 2 movements will do that.
I'm with Dr. MMA. Have BJ fight Thiago Alves and if he wins that, then he gets the winner of Fitch-GSP. There's enough time to fit that matchup in.

I'd much rather see Penn fight GSP than Fitch. I just hope after it's done he goes back to lightweight.

I rather see Penn/GSP2 even though I got GSP and Huerta losing so if GSP and Huerta lose then Penn should fight Kenny.

Fitch has got a horse neck and is damn near unsubmittable, but once BJ gets him in that "grasshopper back control" position, where he uses his leg like another arm and pins Fitch's arm at his side, he'll get a good grasp of that neck and choke his ass out.
But despite wanting to see Jon Fitch get submitted, I too would much rather see Penn-GSP II. Plus, there's a decent chance GSP will submit Jon Fitch, in which case I can have my cake and eat it too

There have been many superstar boxers throughout the years who have done the same thing. Move up or down and immediately fight for the title. This is nothing new, and nothing to bitch about imo.
Not to mention, who's not going to watch this? Bitch or not, we're all getting this ppv. Saying he doesn't deserve a title shot is debatable. Yeah he lost to Hughes, and GSP, however, he took a fairly short notice fight with Hughes. If you remember GSP was scheduled for that fight, was giving Hughes a beating, was injured, and maybe gassed, but the injury isn't debatable at this point, and lost.
Some think he beat St. Pierre, but either way it was a fight that deserved a rematch. If he beats St. Pierre this time, did he deserve a title shot? This could be a philosophical disagreement. If you can beat someone, you deserve the shot. Or you should fight 2 or 3 people who aren't close to your league to prove you should fight some guy that you almost beat when you were fat and out of shape.
I understand the school of thought, because there are guys who have been climbing the ladder, however, Alves had his biggest win in the weight class...not making the weight class.
IMO Penn will hold two belts, defend both successfully once, then move up. No one has done it, and he wants to be the best ever. If he does this, hey, he may be. A debate for the ages.
