This is a good thread...it's been done before, but with MMA attracting new fans [and new fans coming to the site] it's not something I think has been done too much...
I agree with you post except for: Quote:

I look at it this way...if someone is even talented enough to hold Vera for three rounds in a vertical LnP, they should go out and do it. If they aren't, they should keep their fucking mouths shut and not disrespect something they can't do. Quote:

I'd rather fight in an American arena simply because of the awesome energy the crowd the delivers. The Japanese fans are technical but a lot of fights feel like they are taking place in a library.

very few "fans" who are not participants in any sport know all the very technical details. You get 50k drunken football fans together and I bet 1% could explain in great detail what is going on to someone from Europe or Asia. The same goes for baseball or basketball. These drunken jersey buying knuckleheads are what makes sports profitable.

American fans are drunk, obnoxious jackasses with no respect and hardly any knowledge of what's going on in front of their eyes.
Japanese fans should be applauded for their knowledge and respect of MMA and martial arts in general. You never hear any booing and they actually know what's going on. I love watching DREAM simply because you don't see some drunk bimbo or some drunk jackass all in the camera holding a beer screaming "WOOOOOO, look at me, I'm a fucking moron."

Awesome points made in this thread. The first few Pride events I saw (admittedly nearly 8 years after I had seen my first UFC) had me in awe over how quiet the crowd was. It was like everyone couldn't be bothered to make noise because they were so concentrated on the fight. I know now it's just a difference in culture but I still appreciate it regardless of their reasoning. The crowd going nuts over setups for submissions after being near dead-silent just makes it that much cooler.
One thing that pisses me off about select American fans (even some of my friends who know their stuff) is that they will always cheer for the American over ANY foreign fighter. To me this is nuts and nonsensical, as often times I'd be VERY disappointed with several fights' outcomes if I looked at things with that sort of tunnelvision. I appreciate ALL cultures/nationalities in this sport. I cheer for the fighters that excite me, regardless of what flag they're donning. Sure, I take pride in American MMA fighters leaving their footprint, but this country's borders are in no way a pre-determinating factor of who I'm going to root for in a fight.

Very good points in this thread, tend to agree with everyone so far one way or another, the thread probably should've of been titled Japanese fans vs Other Fans. My bad, thanks for the comments though.

It's not just Bisping. Remember the Hughes/GSP fight? Remember when the crowd boo'd GSP on his way to the cage, chanted USA for the first minute. As soon as GSP started landing some shots, the fans turned and chanted "GSP".
In North America, if the fight is on the ground for 5 seconds they boo. If you're standing, and nobody has thrown a punch for 5 seconds they boo. Total lack of respect.
It's not just MMA, it's all sports here. Very few franchise's have fans who back their teams in bad times. Celtics fans wore bags over their heads to game when they were awful, then are die hard fans when they win.
What about the Red Wings? They can't sell out a play off game, and then their fans show up only when they have a strangle hold on the finals.
I went to a fighting event in the Philippines a year ago, and the first fight wasn't quite what you would call exciting. It was LnP all the way, yet the fans never boo'd once. They would cheer for every transition, every sub attempt, basically every movement. They were cheering the same way for the next fight, which was a slugfest. It might even be more of an asian respect thing, but hands down Japanese fans take the cake.

I think as American, and world, fans become more educated in the sport you will see less booing. There will always be chants and stuff, but that is part of our heritage in sports.
I was one of those people at one point that kind of groaned when the fight hit the ground. Now that I have learned more about the ground game I love watching two skilled people engage in a ground battle. It is exciting as hell.
I am not a fan of booing though. The only time booing is okay is when the Iron Sheik is walking to the squared circle with a waiting Hulk Hogan. Then Hulkamania can BOOOOO away!

I like what Vitor said about the booing fans at Affliction...why don't they get in the ring and try it.
When I'm at a bar, I'll occasionally get upset with a fighter's performance (i.e Almeida at the last UFC PPV), but I wouldn't boo him if I was at the event. I'm also fortunate enough that most of the other regulars are somewhat knowledgeable when it comes to MMA.

From Fedor to Arlovski to Wand to St. Pierre to Penn to Yamamoto to Cro Cop...............CELEBRATE DIVERSITY! | What about Brazilians? They always want each other ot win, no matter who the oponent is. Also, they won't even train with other fighters who are going to fight another Brazilian. I realize you were talking about fans, not fighters, but I'm sure the Brazilian MMA fans are the same way
