Georges St. Pierre Vs. Anderson Silva Could Happen At A Catch Weight
By Jason Perkins | August 19, 2008
The big news coming out of the UFC's recent press conference in Chicago for UFC 90 is the possibility of a match up between UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
UFC President Dana White stoked the fire of the potential blockbuster during the press conference stating of that the two could meet at a catch weight.
"(Anderson Silva) could meet Georges St. Pierre at a catch weight," said White. "This guy wants to challenge himself. He'd probably fight at 145 pounds if we asked him to."
This declaration comes on the heals of news out of BJ Penn's camp that Penn will not be facing St. Pierre at the UFC's New Year's Eve event as had previously been rumored. St. Pierre himself admitted recently that he needed to take some time off and would not likely fight again this year.
The UFC finds itself in an interesting predicament with three clearly dominant champions at lightweight, welterweight and middleweight. The space between each champion and the rest of their respective weight classes are so substantial that the organization is now turning to pitting them against one another; and in Silva and Penn's case allowing them to fight outside of their natural weight classes.

Ohhh this would be nice.. A catch weight at 178lbs would be fun to see... but not sure if Anderson could make that cut...

I'm just really excited for this card since I actually get to go to the event and see Anderson live. I was also pleased when I open up the Chicago Sun-Times this morning and there was an article on UFC 90/the press conference in the sports section.
Chicago is a great sports town and I hope the MMA gets the recognition it deserves. The only problem is there are two baseball teams that have a shot at being in the WS come October 25th and that would steal the spotlight from the UFC in a heartbeat in Chicago.

Even though Silva is a black belt I think GSP has a definite advantage on the ground. Just my opinion of course. I honestly think GSP's bjj is better then A.Silva's. At least from what I've see so far. Mix in his wrestling and I see a big advantage for GSP on the ground.
But I still don't think GSP would win.

Anderson has fought at 167 before. He could make the cut to welterweight if he really wanted to do it.
I think they should just fight at 180. GSP cuts weight anyway.

If GSP beats Penn and defends his title a couple times I'd love to see this fight. I just wish Machida would lose to Thiago Silva so Anderson would go after the LHW belt then once he gets that come down for the superfight at Welterweight (where he could make weight) or a catchweight.

But I still don't think GSP would win. | I havent seen anything from Gsp's Bjj that tells me its better than Anderson's he goes for a Kimura everytime hes got good defensive JJ but I think andersons length would give him trouble on the ground. Gsp has the wrestling advantage no doubt but if Silva wrestling was good enough to neutralize Hendo I think it would be good enough to neutralize Gsp.

They need to just slow down a lil bit throwing all this shit out at once. The rumored GSP/Penn 2 has not even happened yet and already we have rumors of Liddell/Anderson and GSP/Anderson lol

I think GSP is fast enough to keep Anderson out of a rhythm... For a while at least... I can't wait to see what happens the first time GSP shoots in on Anderson... I WANT THIS FIGHT MAN!!!
