Jim Ross On Couture-Lesnar
Submitted by Michael Bluth on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 12:17 PM EST
- Jim Ross comments about the upcoming Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture fight in his latest blog entry. J.R. writes: Couture will give up approximately 50 pounds to Lesnar come fight time which makes the 5 rounder especially intriguing. Couture is a master at capitalizing on a fighter's mistakes and is a supreme strategist. However, if Lesnar continues to improve as he did between the Mir and Herring fights it will be extremely difficult for anyone who is giving up that much weight and is over a decade older to defeat the former WWE and NCAA wrestling champion. I applaud the UFC for getting this alleged, internally personal matter resolved as it relates to Randy Couture and UFC honchos. The fans should always come first which should be a no brainer business wise but in personality driven businesses like MMA, etc it isn't always that simple.”

You have to love good ole' JR! Very intelligent guy, great eye for talent. I really like he has taken a likeing to MMA instead of seeing it as a threat like most boxing promoters do.

Yeah. Brief, but insightful comments from JR.
If Randy gets past Brock, especially if he finishes him, it would be the single most impressive victory on his resume so far, IMO.

What has he accomplished in MMA? The man has no stripes in this sport so I just don't see how a win or win with a finish over Lesner would be viewed as the single-greatest feat in Couture's MMA career.
I would reserve that for Couture vs Liddell I where he out struck Liddell handily for 3 rounds and TKOed him.
Regarding the topic, that's funny, I just created a thread and stated basically the same exact thing word for word including the 50lb weight difference and Couture being a strategic genius. Good times.

Yeah I wouldn't consider it his greatest achievement either, I think people are getting a bit carried away with Brocks win over Herring, there are still some questionable parts of his game, such as sub defence (which Herring never got to test) and his chin.

I would like to see his chin tested, and I'm hoping Randy can do it.
However, I do think that Brock can beat Randy if he out-wrestles him and then lays on him. I'm hoping Randy is training nothing but subs right now so that he will win.

So far, Lesnar probably has the most power, as of my thinking right now, in the HW division. Randy is a pretty damn good wrestler himself. Also, I don't think that Lesnar's win over Herring was all that impressive. He threw on good punch and wrestled the rest of the fight. He also didn't show too much sportsmanship at the end. But that speaks of his character, not of his skills.
