|  Why wasn’t MMA legalized in New York?

I have been wondering for a few month’s now why MMA wasn’t legalized in the state of New York this past summer. Well it turns out it is because of one guy if you can believe it, Bob Reily is a New York state law maker and a complete douche if you ask me. In a recent interview with ESPN Riley gave his account of what happened on June 11th when the bill went to a vote:

“When I came to the committee meeting, I only intended to voice my personal opposition to the measure. But when I swayed enough people on the committee to vote against it, I became the point person in opposition.”
| When asked why he was against MMA :

“I’m opposed to the proposed legislation because of the brutality of the sport,” he said. “The people who are drawn to mixed martial arts are attracted by the brutality of it, which goes above and beyond what you see in boxing. It seems, to me, beyond logic that we in the state legislature would consistently pass laws against physical abuse and physical intimidation, everything from domestic abuse to bullying in schools, and then allow this stuff. We should not be encouraging the glorification of this kind of violence.”

I personally can’t stand when uneducated morons like this guy assume all fans are in it for the “brutality”. I watch MMA because of the excitement,also because of how much skill and technical prowess these fighters have. Saying mma is too brutal is a Red Herring, its because the guy is probably in the pockets of boxing, which has been know to have corrupt promoters with shady businessmen and the mob, epically in NY.

It's funny that he compares a sport in which two combatants enter a cage willingly, to child abuse. This has to be the single dumbest thing I've heard regarding MMA.
I agree that a lot of fans are drawn to it by the brutality. But a lot of fans are drawn to boxing, football and hockey for the same reasons.

| That is a great point. Also, how does this guy condone boxing as an ok influence on children, but thinks MMA is to brutal. You cant have it both ways choose a side!!!!!

The guy is an asshat... but most importantly has probably been paid off by the boxing lobbyists. NY is so fucking corrupt. FUCK NY... we dont need the garden.
