| Japanese MMA vs American MMA
I've been reading alot of people knocking Pride lately. I think most of you are fools who can only think of the UFC when MMA comes up. But is American MMA better than Japanese..
I think that the Japanese are far ahead of us when it comes to their orginazations, ticket sales, and variety.
and this is not just a Pride vs UFC thing, (although most US promoters with the exception of the IFL are mini UFC clones)
Deep, GCM, K1, Pancrase, Shooto and ZST offer alot of variety within the sport. First Shooto is truley the only association with a real ranking system and it isn't a promoter but a sactioning body. Gcm and Zst are very interesting they have rules about the types of stikes you can do, one has friggen tag team matches and they have some interesting grappling and takedowns you won't see anywhere else. And Prides Bushido and Grand Prix Tourney's offer variety from 1 promoter. Japanese have taken alot of smart lessons from Pro Wrestling and made them work for MMA.
In the US we have alot of the same carbon copy ideas about MMA. Now there is something to be said for having a standard, but i think most promoters just conform to be like the next guy and don't think about how they can enhance the sport.
Now although I don't love athletic commissions they are very good about 1 thing, and thats the safety of the fighter. The rules about how and when you can fight after a lose or an injury are important. Japan is 40 years behind us when it comes to their medical treatment and care of fighters. That is something i've been told first hand by Derek Panza who has cornered for Guy Mezger in Pride more than once, and is a 3 time ISKA Heavyweight Champ. Just look at Sakuraba and you can see how they can grind their talent down. and Wandi Mirko fight in the owgp would have been stopped in Vegas no American Doctor would have sent him back out there. (it was great seeing him get ko'd)

I tend to believe it's the latter.

One issue that I feel is holding back American MMA is an overly restrictive sanction body. Tokyo is much more flexible about what they will allow their orginizations to get away with compared to Vegas. The Open Weight GP is a great idea but i am not sure if it would fly in any U.S. venue.
I also think that the tournament is a great format in general

I am just trying to ask which people think is better, and I believe I stated that i thought the japanese run things better. i am a fan of the sport and the fighters, and right now the differences in the japanese orginazations makes them worth talking about. and ingnorants is not seeing the differences in things in life and taking note. schmuck

of course you're right on the safety thing. no sanctioned American MMA ref would let Saku get beat on like that, and rightfully so. that was an unfair advantage to him, as well as an unnecessary risk
but there are some things that Japan gets to do that i would love to see in the UFC, fighter safety or no.
get rid of the diving turtle slide done by every wrestler ever, by adding knees on the ground.
get rid of elbows and subsequently, take away kenny florian's chance at winning any fight against someone good.

there's a difference in saying "i prefer UFC over Pride" than saying "UFC is better than Pride"
