| Matt Lindland falls short in Oregon House race Quote:
Republican Matt Lindland fell short on Tuesday for his bid to win a seat in the Oregon State House of Represenatives.
Democrat Suzanna VanOrman defeated Lindland in District 52 by a solid margin, garnering 58 percent of the 16,886 total votes. Lindland scored 42 percent of the vote, or 7,055 votes to VanOrman's 9,792 (39 write-in votes were also cast).
Lindland, an MMA fighter who was born in Oregon and now promotes his Sportfight promotion in the state, won the Republican nomination in May.
The 2000 Olympic wrestling silver medalist guaranteed he would support no new tax increases and promised to help lure new businesses to the state. The 38-year-old also pledged to improve the education system and to help protect property rights.
Although Lindland's lack of political experience surely played a part in the election's outcome, he was also campaigning in a traditionally blue state in which Democrats dominated this year's election. Voters were also confronted with VanOrman's negative ads in which she criticized Lindland's involvement as an "ultimate fighter."
"My opponent gets paid hundreds of thousands (of dollars) for his brutal fights," VanOrman said in one ad. "I'll leave the head-butting to my opponent, and I'll stay focused on the fights that really matter for our families."
The UFC banned head-butting in 1997, and no major MMA organizations currently allows the strikes.
Lindland (21-5), a former UFC and IFL fighter, last fought in July at "Affliction: Banned," where he picked up his 10th win in his past 12 fights. He'll likely fight for the organization again in January.
| Mods, feel free to move to off-topic eventually.
While I don't agree with his or his party's policies, it would have been something else to see an MMA veteran with a seat in the House.
Oh, and lol at mmajunkie's little aside about head-butting.

I lived in Oregon, and suffered through the Democratic control that ruined that state.
Now I live in Montana, where Democrats have control, and are doing a great job.
Just goes to show the D or the R after the candidate name doesn't really mean that much...

mouse over mt.
Where do you live there? meaning what city? I lived there for a few years in a couple different places.
as for lindland. I think he thinks a lot more of himself than he's shown value. But I don't know anything about his area or his platform. But it sure doesn't look like a difficult race for her to win.
