| Is Werdum (really) out of UFC? Quote:
Following a rocky time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, capped by a surprising knockout loss to Octagon newcomer Junior dos Santos at UFC 90, Chute Boxe fighter Fabricio Werdum has left the promotion.
Sources tell MMAWeekly.com that Werdum's exit comes on the heels of a failed contract renegotiation following the loss to dos Santos. The Brazilian came into the fight with the expectation that he would soon be contending for a heavyweight title shot.
The knockout at UFC 90 derailed anything of the like in the near future, and spurred a renegotiation of his contract. Werdum and the UFC were apparently unable to come to an agreement. He has already opened talks with other promotions in the U.S. and Japan.
After losing his opening salvo in the UFC to Andrei Arlovski, Werdum put together back-to-back impressive victories with TKOs of Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, effectively positioning him as one of the top contenders in the promotion's heavyweight division.
Current champion Randy Couture faces Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 on Saturday and interim heavyweight titleholder Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira defends against Frank Mir on Dec. 27 at UFC 92. The winners of those two fights are expected to fight in early 2009, as a unification bout to the UFC mini-tournament.
Had Werdum taken care of business against dos Santos, he was expected to be in contention to face the unified heavyweight champion later in the year. Now it appears he will be moving on to another promotion such as Affliction in the U.S. or Dream or Sengoku in Japan.

More fuel for those who like to dump on UFCs HW division.

I like to Dump on their HW division. It seems like they cant hold a good HW for the life of them. It is a good thing Werdum is leaving if he goes to Affliction he will have the competition he needs to become a better HW. I always felt he was overrated but I like him. If Gabe ever gets some heart I believe he would beat Werdum. IMO

They asked him to take a paycut. Typical UFC business tactics

Werdum was a good fighter to have on the roster hopefully this make him a hungier fighter.
Gonzaga has all the physical tools and gifts but not the heart he "could" be a guy consistently in the top five of his weight class
I hope Werdum bounces back he is a good fighter we just didn't get a chance to see it in his last fight. Its a shame he couldn't re-negoitiate his contract i thnk he could of bounced back and been in a contender spot a year from now.

what were they paying him to begin with? I can imagine they just didn't offer him a raise. Because I'm sure he is worth at least what he was making before to them. Probably feels like he is worth more. He'll probably go fight for DREAM and get a paycheck that bounces then come back to the UFC.

Well unless he gets to meet the Wizard of Oz..
Gabe is Gabe, Werdum 3 would end the same way.
Why is he not willing to take a pay cut, whats left out there? Affliction, Dream, Sengoku, thats it!!
Come to think of it Fedor V. Werdum sounds good to me.

sorry for the double post, but I wanted to share a theory.
I think the dying Heavyweight division is a product of the age of MMA. See, back when the UFC first came around, nobody wanted to see small guys outside of anyone named Gracie. They wanted big heavy bruisers like Chuck Liddell, Ortiz, Frye, Severn, and Tank Abbott. They were the draw because they were guys in there tryin to knock the other guys head off. A lot of these familliar names are getting older and retireing or ending up on CAGE FIGHTING EXTREEEEME 36 in Bumscrew, New York.
MMA over time has slowly transitioned into a Jiujitsu practitioners dream. Case in point, Minotauro. This man will get pummelled like a thief then out of nowhere SUBMISSION!!!! It's getting to the point where the Heavyweights are nowhere near as entertaining as the lighter weights who get in the cage/ring and go crazy. GSP, BJ Penn, Faber, Yamamoto, Aoki, etc... and the speed and submissions just dazzle people more than a 265 lbs guy that gasses after 3 mins of a fight.
I guess the point I'm tryin to make is that the UFC's heavyweight division isn't SOOOOO fucked, its just the overall layout of heavyweights in the world is less than desireable. It's to the point that people have a hard time making a top 10 list. The moment I see Lesnar's name on that top 10 list I will laugh so hard my liver will explode. (somewhere Bas just got excited).
Heavyweights are so far out of the game that somebody that is muscular that is good at holding people on a mat can come in and basically prison rape you for a full fight, and you're the one that gets tired and battered. The emergence of guys like Shane Carwin will prove dividends for the UFC, but for now the one that owns Fedor is the one that owns the Heavyweights.
Done babbling, Peace.
