UFC 72: Victory
June 16th 2007

There were a few reasons I did not choose to purchase/view the event.
- No title fights. Its my weakest reason but in my opinion the best way to draw a new viewer. Anyone who doesn't know a lick about mma/ufc can look at a poster advertising the event and see a picture of a fighter or two holding their respective belts. The un-knowledgeable person would say "hey this looks interesting, I dont know who these guys are but he has a belt so it must mean he is pretty good." Nothing better to me than watching a great fight and title change hands at the end of the night. Regardless if the title doesn't change hands your looking at the best guy in the division(within the UFC) vs. a number 1 contender. Let's look at the fact on why we buy a ppv. WE WANT TO SEE GREAT FIGHTS! We feel ripped off when we buy a ppv and got no great fights for it. So what better way on attempting to guarantee good fights other than having a title fight? I still believe though with enough talent on a card you don't need title fights and still a good card can be done.
- Not enough Star Power Rich Franklin was the biggest draw on this card and might have been the only ranked fighter on the card. I'm not too sure about Okami. Another way to help solidify good fights is with good fighters.
- 8 fights on card I think only Jake O'Brien fight was pulled due to injury. Even with that fight scheduled it still was at 9 fights. Nothing too exciting about the results either. 1 KO through out the whole night and 3 out of 5 main card fights were decision.
- 1st UFC covered by ESPN and they ruined it! I remember that day clearly. I got home and sparked up the grill to get ready for a night of great food and beer. I sat down waiting for the grill to warm up and I'm watching ESPNNEWS at 4:00 pm (chicago time) and there goes Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg revealing fight by fight the results of the PPV. Than when they were done, they had the audacity to encourage viewers to still buy the PPV!?!?! I think the UFC learned from this bad mistake and this might have been one of the last PPV that was on a tape delay. UFC 80: Rapid Fire was the last PPV to be on a tape delay.
I know that UFC has no way of making sure every fight ends in a KO or SUBMISSION. Their obligation is to try and put on the best show possible for us the viewers. I think they do a good job for a majority of the time and every once in a while you get that bad apple. And to me that bad apple is UFC 72.
UFC 61 comes in a close second. The fights all made me want to throw up. The AA/SILVIA fight was the closest thing I have ever seen to watching a gay porno. | That was actually a GREAT PPV IMO. Just about every single fight was great and full of action. Guida and Griffin was an awsome fight, Sanchez Vs. ... I forgot, was a great fight, Franklin battled a good 3 rounds with Okami that saw Franklin showing his ground game.
Every time I watch that card I find myself not skipping a single fight. It is one of the few where I can put it on and watch the whole thing. It's kinda like when you buy a CD to only listen to a few songs, there are very vew CD's that I just let play in my car w/out skipping songs.
IMO you missed a good live PPV.

UFC 61-Bitter Rivals I always hated and remember feeling ripped off when I bought it.
I have the UFC 20-30 dvd set and for UFC 24, it was supposed to be Rizzo/Randelman, but Kevin Randelman fell backstage and got ko'd and the main event was switched to Tedd Williams vs. Steve Judson, amazing.

Ironically, the prelims for 78 were way better than the PPV. Alves vs. Lytle, Gono vs. McCrory and Aurelio vs. Caudillo were probably the best three fights on the card

I actually enjoyed the hell out of that card. Diego/Fitch was a great fight, and I could watch Forrest choking out Shogun any night.

I am a huge Buentello mark and was so excited for Paul to headhunt Arlovski, for those who remember, it didn't turn out so well for me and Buentello.
The undercard was pretty brutal, Forrest vs Elvis and Sean Gannon on the card. Pretty horrendous card. Still mad that the main event went down as it did, I often think about it and believe in my gut that Buentello had what it took to beat Arlovski and make a damn great UFC champ.

Funny timing, I was thinking last night of starting a thread like this.
For me, easy - UFC 61, which was also the very first live UFC card I ever saw. I was so fired up for Tito-Shamrock II and Arlovski-Sylvia III, and both fights ended very disappointingly.
Just as Fedorlei Gomipierre said above, I felt pretty ripped off by that card and wondered for a little while if live UFC's were always this disappointing.
STILL have never seen a PPV since that one that was more disappointing to me. 72, 78, you name it.

Then Arlovski starts freaking out while the stunned crowd waits for the replay to figure out what the hell just happened.
The Bodog Fedor vs. Lindland PPV also wasn't so hot. It looked like they were filming inside an unlit cave
