| A real look at Hughes/GSP 2
I’ll start by saying I’m a huge GSP fan, and that I believe this fight will be epic. Let’s take a look at how they stack up. First we have to look at the competition each has faced (in the last few years, going back too far isn’t justified) and then see how they performed. Since he arrived in the UFC, GSP has fought Mayhem, Penn, Karo, Sherk, Hieron and of course Hughes. He only lost once in his entire career (to Hughes) and has pretty much dominated everyone else, aside from Penn, but it shows that he can come back after being down and win. Penn, Karo and Sherk are all A class fighters and Mayhem in no slouch. Hughes has fought BJ twice, losing the first time (convincingly) and then getting dominated the second time and pulling out the win (which I feel was do to BJ’s injury) He fought Riggs and no offense to Riggs, but who hasn’t beat Riggs, I think that fight should not have happened. He fought Royce and although I love Royce, he is not competitive and I think most people in the WW division would beat him convincingly. Hughes has also fought Trigg and dominated him for the most part but again, Trigg is not an A level fighter. And of course the fight between Hughes and GSP, which was a good fight and I believe GSP had him on the ropes, but made an error and got tapped. So competition wise I believe GSP has faced much tougher opponents then Hughes in the past few years. Techniques wise I think GSP has him covered in the stand up game (after seeing Hughes second fight with penn he was just getting picked apart) Wrestling and strength I feel they are close to even as I can’t see either one really muscling the other. Jiu-Jitsu is a toss up and heart wise you have to give it to GSP; he is hungry and wants this bad. Also, I believe GSP has gone on record saying he was not mentally ready and gave Hughes too much respect the first time, clearly that will not happen again. And let’s not forget Hughes close friend Rich just got destroyed, which might affect him, showing him that their place at top can be taken. Discuss.

Why would Rich's loss effect Matt in any way?
Fighters lose, they all have. I'm sure Rich's loss to Anderson will be the last thing on Matt's mind while he's training and getting in the octagon.

Because Rich was a close friend and it makes him question his own mortality. Seeing his friend get destroyed could make him realize that his reign can also come to an end. I'm not saying it will affect him, he's the champ and i'm sure he's mentally tuff as nails, it was just a thought and the rest of the thread was my point.

All excellent points. This fight isn't comparable to Rich's though. All due respect to Silva, but compared to GSP he relatively flew under the radar until the title fight. NOBODY is taking GSP for granted coming into this fight.
I definately have to agree with you on the competition aspect. With the exception of the last 4 seconds of Hughes/GSP 1 and the first round against Penn you have total dominance by GSP in his career. His ability to pass guard and impose his will on a fight is awesome. Add to that the fact that Hughes has been exposed as vulnerable recently. With a little but of luck and a lot of heart Hughes has remained champion but I don't think thats going to be enough against GSP's determination and skills.
This is going to be a war and I think GSP is going to have do a few rounds worth of damage to Hughes before he has a real good shot to end it.

gsp looked better against bj than hughes, stopped sherk when hughes couldn't, destroyed trigg when hughes showed some trouble, beat karo and mayhem. gsp is going to win. plain and simple.

It is going to be a tough war but i see matt pulling it out , not by much but i see him pulling it out. id like to see gsp win because he wont get another shot until matt gets beat or moves in weight class or retires, but only person i can see beating matt is bj, and i hate bj but i have to admit bj can beat matt, because if matt beats gsp this time he wont get another shot at matt again
