Matt Hughes vs Matt Serra made official for UFC 98 on May 23
By: Jesse Holland
The UFC today confirmed that arch enemies Matt Hughes and Matt Serra will finally face off in the Octagon to settle their bitter score at UFC 98 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 23.
Both former welterweight champions have been sidelined with injuries — Serra sustained an elbow injury in his loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 83: “Serra vs. St. Pierre 2″ back in April and Hughes has been nursing a knee injury that he suffered in his loss to Thiago Alves at UFC 85: “Bedlam″ back in June.
Complicating the situation even more — as if it needed it — is the fact the Serra and his wife are expecting their first child sometime in April, which is the reason it could not happen sooner.
Serra and Hughes — who are about as opposite as two people can get — were opposing coaches in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 6 and were supposed to fight at UFC 79: “Nemesis” in December 2007. However, Serra had to withdraw because of a serious back injury.
The trash-talking has not stopped ever since and will more than likely ratchet up again sooner rather than later with their bout now less than three months away.
The good news this time around is that we now have a firm date, location and event number for the 170-pound showdown — important details that were absent prior to this point.
Finally.

Awesome grudge match in the making. It's a long shot but I hope Serra catches Hughes with one of his power shots.

He caught GSP, that won't happen again to anyone Serra fights. He's a bonafide reality star, nothing more. Look no further than a 6-5 UFC record.

Serra has some serious jits skills. I came across footage of his ADCC fight vs Gomi. He dominated him from start to finish. YouTube - Matt Serra vs Gomi Grappling
Serra by 2nd Sub. Hughes better bring his vaseline.

You just know that whoever wins this one will be claiming they're next for a title shot! Their ego's can't let them see that GSP would dominate them at this point.

May 23rd is a long way away. PLENTY of time for a training injury!
I used to really want to see this fight. Now it just elicits a yawn.

I've been saying all along that best-case scenario for this fight is for Hughes to completely dominate and then retire.
Hughes could probably hang around for a while and do descent. However, I think his legacy demands that he retires now and go down as a future HOFer and still (for now) best welterweight champ ever. Since the sport is gaining so many casual fans so quickly lately, many might only remember him for his GSP/Alves fights, which are not indicative of his career.
Serra getting owned will send him back to top 20 status, where he belongs. I can finally take him outta my top 10 and make room for those who SHOULD be vying for a title shot.
Fingers crossed...

You know, as much as I think Hughes will probably dominate and pummel Da Terra, I think he really could shock us all. He's solid on the ground and lets it hang as a striker. Maybe he'll pull a sub on Hughes once he gets taken down??
Dunno, I'll take Serra in an upset. Just somethin' in my gut.
