| How Van Damme took Demian Maia to MMA How Van Damme took Demian to MMA :: TATAME Quote: How Van Damme took Demian Maia to MMA
Money, pleasure or just for the sport itself, each fighter has his reason to go for a career in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA competitions. One of the best middleweight fighters in action at UFC, Demian Maia told TATAME Magazine March issue his story, and it’s probably one of the most curious. Forget about money or just the will of competitions, Maia wanted to follow the steps of his childhood idol: Jean Claude Van Damme.
“When I was a boy, I saw a Van Damme movie in which he hot in a different kinds of martial arts in fights. There I thought: ‘one day I’ll be in one of these competitions’”, told Demian, referring to the movie Blodsport, which Van Damme represents America against several others martial arts, including Brazil. In the exclusive interview for TATAME’s March issue, Demian spoke about his relationship and trainings with Wanderlei Silva, the best and worst moments of his career, his idols, how would he face Anderson Silva and much more.
| Very interesting, to say the least. But really, who'd of ever thought Maia's childhood idol would be JCVD? I'm almost shocked, to be honest.
Growing up in late 80's and early 90's, JCVD was the man. Regardless of what people think of him today, guys like him, Steven Seagal, Sylvester Stallone, and Dolph Lundren, gave us back what we've been missing since the death of Bruce Lee. Quality martial arts flicks!
I loved alot of his early films such as Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Cyborg, Double Impact, and a few others. Today, not so much. Although JCVD was a rather good little flick. Anyways, good to see his days of glory inspired people. I also think Maia isn't the first that he has inspired.

JCVD is the shit.
I grew up watching his movies like Kickboxer, Bloodsport, Double Impact, Cyborg, Universal Soldier, ect,..
Even though those movies were half shitty, I still give credit to JCVD on why I enjoy MMA.

I still love it.

You know, when I watched UFC 1 live on PPV, I immediately thought of JCVD and Bloodsport. Quote:

Best movie he ever made since Kickboxer, Bloodsport and Lion Heart. | Aye, I have that on DVD, and seen it like, twice. Quite good, but Lawrence Taylor was kinda annoying. It was like he was on crack in every one of his scenes. Worst performance ever on his part. No Retreat, No Surrender was also bad ass. JCVD as the kickboxing version of Ivan Drago, priceless.
PS- Qball1974... same here, bud. And haha at American Ninja. I so loved that movie. I have it on VHS somewhere.
