It's not usually the cut itself that stops the fight but the fact that the cut is bleeding and therefore possibly impairing the vision of the fighter. If the fighter can't see properly with something bleeding into his eye then he cant intelligently defend himself and sooner or later will get nailed and WTFKO'd.
A cut that doesnt impair vision is usually just checked and left, just like Dewees in TUF a cut that bled massively but didnt go near his eyes and so continued for a further 10 minutes without problem.

If throwing an elbow is what a competitor only uses to win a fight let him. It's up to the guy he's fighting to be prepared for sharp elbows. How's it any cheaper than guys like (I forget his name) that won the TUF4 really pretty much only on his BJJ? BJJ is part of the game so if a guy is great at it he's going to use it and throw very few punches. If a guy is good at inflicting damage with an elbow, of course he's going to use that to his advantage. Chuck Liddell throws punches and kicks all fight, just because he doesn't fight on the ground you must think "Well he's not a good fighter because he only throws punches." It seriously doesn't make sense to call an elbow dirty if elbows are legal.

I have no problem with someone tryna open up a cut on somebody, hurting your opponent is what you should do.. but if you center your entire gameplan on opening a cut just to win the fight.. no thank you thats pathetic.. it reminds me of Ortiz-Shamrock 2 after that stoppage I wondered what would stop a wrestler from centering his gameplan around taking a fighter down and throwing a few quick elbows to pick up an easy victory.. it just shouldnt go down like that.
Like I said earlier, if an accidental headbutt or something like TK-Fedor 1 happens.. the fight should go to the scorecard or be a NC, I dont think Fedor should have a loss on his record just cuz he got cut open by an accidental elbow. The UFC needs to be more consistent with its stoppages too.. Neer was bleeding half to death in his fight with Guillard and nothing happened.

Im all for elbows to the head or cuts ending a fight, the way i think about it its called mixed martial arts, and if you can succesfully take a guy down, pass his guard and make him eat un-answered elbows untill he can't see because of his own blood, you won the fight fair and square.

| copping out
I think that a fighter who purposely uses elbows to open up a fighter and win by doctor stoppage is copping out. I'm the type of person who would use every limb on my body to beat an opponent as long as it is legal. But you have people like Kenflo and sometime's Loiseau who come in to a fight looking for that and it make's you think that maybe these guy's don't really want any peice of thier opponent. For the record I completely agree with Afro Samurai if a cut does happen and the fight is called by doctor stoppage you should then go by the cards. I hate to see a fighter dominating then he get's hit with an elbow bleed's then the fight is called and he loses. If you really think about it, that's total B.S.
