Dropping to guard is sometimes not an option against the cage or against the ropes.

The more you lean back in a clinch, the more leverage you give your opponent. In Franklin's case, it seemed like he was trying to pull back and away but that just gave Silva a better anchor to launch his knees from.

there are a bunch of ways to get out of the clinch. the first and most obvious is to try and swim your arms in and get the clinch yourself. the same way you pummell, only you are reaching behind the neck. a good clinch should prevent the swim though. another simple defense is to just go for a body lock. which puts you in the dominate position since you'll have double underhooks, thenn you can leg sweep land knee on belly and pound away or look for your sub from side or full mount. another good escape is to reach one arm around your opponents head, you then turn your hips and pot your leg across there body. so picture your kneeon one hip, and from the knee down is across his waist. (he wont be able to knee from here, and he will still be holding the clinch so you dont have to worry about elbows) you then lean back on your back leg, and pull his head down with your hand thats around his head. this will free you from the clinch. then you swim in underhis arms keeping your leg between you until you have the clinch yourself. as soon as you have the clinch you drop your leg and immediatly start firing your knees. my favorite escape is to put both my arms around his head, almost like im putting a clinch over his clinch. i then oul his head to my shoulder like im trying to smash his face with it. i pivot my hip into him at the same time i pull his face to my shoulder, this breaks the clinch and opens up an elbow, or a knee to his exposed side.
the clinch is a great tool, but if you know how to get out of it, its not that scary, and almost can be used to your advantage if you know a good counter.

there are many ways to break a clinch and use his clinch to your advantage.
number one- swim your arms through. its the easiest way to break a clinch and usually you will train this in you thai class.
number 2- keep your hips pressed to his, this will keep him from throwing knees to the body and legs and u can swim though his arms and apply a clinch of your own, or swin through his arms and break away.
number 3- alot of times with someone in a clinch they will try and keep there arms locked for extra stregnth, pull there left arm down and as they pull to keep it up push up on the elbow and throw a body kick or break away.
ive trained in thai boxing for almost 4 years and i love the clinch, im a big guy with quick legs and my clinch is the money spot everytime, but i have had my clinch broken by smaller opponents who jsut are better than me.
my best advice if you are not good in the clinch is swim up though his arms and break away with a quick elbow or body kick, break striaght back dont pull your head down when breaking pull your chin up and explode out of the clinch after loosinging his arms.
good luck i love thai boxing and i hope you keep training cause its soo damn fun!!!
where do you train at???
