The fight should have been stopped before the end of the first round and from what I recall and remember, this was like 214,644 bongs later but I think Rothwell actually moved up the cage after Mazzagatti stopped the fight and Cain stopped hitting him in the face.

How many unanswered shots can you take without it being stopped?
Not a bad call by Steve at all. | Right. You'd think with all of his 'experience' that he would understand that you can't just take shots like that. The ref is also there to save fighters from themselves.
Ben was never in the fight. He was outgunned by Cain who seems to be improving all the time. Hope we see him against Junior Dos Santos before long.

A guy does not have the be on the gound getting ground and pounded or knocked out cold for a ref to stop a fight, they have to consitently defend thier self in a manner that benefits them (intelligently) rothwell clearly was not doing this, steve m. made an excellent call, and prior to that he even gave ben a warning, everyone is so fast to scape goat, ben has no one to blame but his self

I think it was an odd call. I can't think of another fight were a fighter was standing up and it was stopped. I was disappointed if only to see Rothwell get beat on for another round and half.

Watch the fight again.. Mazzagatti warned him prior to the start of round 2, and even threatened to stop the fight. He knew damn well what Mazzagatti had said because he nodded an okay back, although he did look disoriented, lol.. so, if he wants to gripe and moan, then he should do so to himself for allowing Velasquez to use him as a punching bag. Simple as.
Mazzagatti isn't my favorite ref, but I'm with him on the stoppage. And Ben Rothwell is a classless fat truck. He can talk all the shit about Cain's punches, but truth be told, he felt every one. His facial appearance and looking all disoriented says it all.

Sure Maz was telling him to defend the punches but please! Next thing you know maz will give him advise like...pull gaurd.....grap an arm!
ben was making a totally deliberate choice to take punches in order to stand up. It doesn't matter what happened in the opening round.
Dana is right on this one "maz shouldn't be allowed to watch MAA, let alone Referee it!!
The outcome would have probably be the same either way.
early stoppage. bad call Maz.

It's fighter safety, I don't think a guy should have to get badly hurt in order for a fight to be stopped. It was clear Rothwell had nothing for Velasquez. Yes he was standing up, but it was probably the 3rd/4th time he walked up the cage while eating flush punches to the face. I understand fans like to see the blood, and a lot of people would have enjoyed watching Rothwell get his face pummeled for another round or so, and Rothwell is kind of delusional thinking he was actually in the fight and maybe was enjoying the beat down, but I think for the sport to be considered decent for the main stream public the fighters need to be protected from unnecessary harm, and letting that fight go on would have been unnecessary.
