| Facts Concerning Brock Lesnar's Illness Quote:
UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar has fallen on rough times as of late. The UFC president, Dana White, recently confirmed to the Associated Press that Lesnar has contracted a digestive disease known as diverticulitis, along with his previous diagnosis of mononucleosis, commonly referred to as “mono.” The question on every MMA fan’s mind is, “What does this mean about Brock’s immediate and long term future?” We will attempt to describe both of these illnesses and the potential damages they may have on Lesnar’s mixed martial arts career.
According to MedicineNet, diverticulitis is a digestive disorder found commonly in the large intestine that stems from diverticula in the colon rupturing and becoming infected. Diverticula form when the lining of the colon thickens and pressure within the colon pushes the lining through cracks in the muscle wall creating sacks along the muscle wall of the colon. When someone has diverticula along their intestinal muscle wall it is called diverticulosis which usually has no symptoms. Diverticulitis then occurs when one (or several) of these diverticuli become infected and rupture causing bacteria to be released.
Common symptoms of severe diverticulitis include: abdominal pain, feeling feverish, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and collection of puss in the pelvis. If not treated, severe diverticulitis can lead to a potentially fatal condition known as peritonitis which is inflammation of the entire abdominal lining. Antibiotics, along with surgery to remove the part of the colon that has been infected, are the treatments used to derail severe cases of diverticulitis like Lesnar’s.

This is a really bad condition for someone in his line of work. My brother had a severe case of this and has major surgery 3 times in the last 5 years as a result. The perforations that occur in the intestine can become full blown holes and be fatal if waste gets into the abdominal cavity. To fix it, the portion of damaged intestine has to be removed and the intestinal track shortened and stitched back up. With proper diet and health care this can be a very managable situation. The problem though is that the weakened intestine is HIGHLY susceptible to hernias. This is the issue my brother constantly deals with. He has two bad hernias since his initial bout with diverticulitis that has needed surgery. The hernias were caused by very minimal physical exertion. I don't know how able Brock will be to train, lift, run and get his body contorted in the way he needs to in order to stay in the shape he needs to be to compete. I hope he is able to control the disorder and live a good life, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that is forced to retire from fighting. Shitty, he was a polarizing character in the UFC and had some great fights in his short term. I hope he can come back, but from my experience with the disease, it might be a real struggle.

Just posted this in my thread, figured I post it here as-well... UFC's Lesnar at home recovering from surgery Quote:
Brock Lesnar was released from a hospital in Bismarck North Dakota and will recover from a bacterial infection at his home.
Lesnar's friend and chiropractor Larry Novotny told the Associated Press late Thursday that Lesnar was home and would not be making any decisions about his career until his health improved.
Novotny's claim was backed up by UFC president Dana White on his twitter account.
"Leaving Bismarck, N.D., right now. Brock had minor surgery and is feeling better," White wrote. "Not 100 per cent sure he is out of the woods but feeling better."
While Lesnar and the UFC have not commented on the specifics of his infection or surgery, WCCO-TV in Minneapolis is reporting that Lesnar had a severe case of diverticulitis, which is a common digestive disease that causes small pouches to form in the digestive system.
Surgery for the condition could become necessary when there is concern that the infection could spread and cause a potentially fatal inflammation.
Lesnar originally was supposed to fight Shane Carwin on November 21 for the title, but that fight was cancelled at the time because Lesnar had mono. The UFC were planning on staging the fight at UFC 108 in January, but with Lesnar's illness the fight has obviously been cancelled.
White told the Associated Press on Monday that Lesnar wanted to thank his fans for their support.

well that sure as hell doesn't sound like the 'minor surgery' that dana had mentioned... but he said after 4-5 days of rest we'll have a better picture of how he'll recover. best wishes.
