| Ortiz vs Griffin Rematch Sells Only 62% Of Tickets 'UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2? Sells Only 62% Of Tickets - FightLine.com Quote: Quote:
Even though “UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2? pulled in a cool $3,003,250 at the gate, the event only sold 6,631 of the available 10,762 tickets. Obviously, these were the after effects of losing its original main event only a month prior to the event.
The UFC comped 3,898 tickets while 223 additional tickets went unsold.
It’ll be interesting to see how the pay-per-view buys do as Ortiz is normally a big draw for the promotion.
Forrest Griffin defeated Tito Ortiz in a re-match of their bout at UFC 59 which Ortiz won by splt decision, prompting talks of a rubber match between the two former light heavyweight champions.
A third fight would probably need to be chaperoned by a bigger fight to make the event, so we’ll see if the UFC wants to put together Ortiz vs. Griffin for a third time.

im not too surprised. A few of my friends didnt even come by to watch like they normally do, seemed like an overall lack of buzz after the main event fell through.
Do you guys still think Tito is the draw he once was?
I dont think so. People always say, "love him or hate him, tito puts asses in seats". after all the injuries and time off between fights, i think the UFC has made new stars to the casual fans and tito isnt the instant buyrate he once was.

I still think Tito can kind of sell, but just not as the main event.IMO his time is just about passed. If they go ahead with Tito Vs Forrest III,I hope it is the third fight down.I think Kos Vs AJ and Lil Nog might have sold this a little more then Tito did,at least for me.

I didn't notice as much a push for this ppv as I have for others in the past so this doesn't surprise me to much.

ticket prices for this event were astronomical.
300.00 for the top balcony.
2 years ago it was 100.00

I said this show did pathetic numbers and I'm glad to see more evidence that I was right.
Tito is not the draw he used to be. The average consumer(and MMA fan) realize he is a 2002 fighter fighting in 2009.

Tito can still draw but you cant market a main event featuring 2 guys that have not won their last couple of fights.Vegas is use to getting huge title fights not something thats co-main event material.Tickets wouldve probably sold out had it been anywhere else.

I don't know how much of an indicator this is. Sure it could be due to Tito's declining ppv drawing ability but there were a couple of major factors involved as well.
UFC 106 was heavily billed around the Lesnar/Carwin match and it deterred fans when the cancellation occurred. It affected the marketing and advertising behind it as you can tell by late Tito/Forrest ads going up and the relatively short UFC countdown episode (their primary hype show). Fans are also affected by the "this card is not as great as it first was". If Lesnar/Carwin was never announced and Tito/Forrest was always scheduled to be the main event, fans wouldn't have higher expectations but it does affect them when the card is losing more than gaining more.
