Mankind has cloned animals, been to the moon, created works of art like Halo 3, but we can't come up with a better scoring system for MMA? I think as a species we need to get our priorities in check.

When I read the title of the thread, my example of a 10-8 round would have been the lawlor simpson fight. That was bullshit. Lawlor mauled him in the first, if nothing else that fight was a draw. I really hope MMA can get the judging under wraps before it loses credibility. I know some people now who say "MMA is fixed" after watching some fights and seeing the dec. It kind of angers me, i almost get offended when people say that, but some of the scoring is just terrible

Oh and one other thing. Can someone clarify about the whole 10/10 round conept? I see people on the boards score rounds 10/10 during a fight sometimes. My understanding from reading the "rules of the octagon" (ufc graphic on ppv's) is that the round winner gets 10 points and the loser gets 9 or less. So a 10/10 round isn't possible under current rules, right?
It is his dog that eats the uncooked bacon.

I have also been wondering about 10/10 rounds. it was my understanding that only the round winner gets 10. I don't think I have ever seen a 10/10 round in MMA.

I agree that a better scoring system is needed. I think one of the reasons we are seeing so many poorly judged fights is that now-a-days the competition is getting so close. I think we are going to see more full fights with less finishes, not that I think this will always be a bad thing.

In case someone on here hasn't read - FCF - Mixed Martial Arts Council UFC Rules update 6/99

You need a dominating round to get a 10-8 (or a 10-9 with a 1 point deduction)

M. Domination Criteria
1. A Judge may determine that a fighter dominated his opponent in a round. This can lead to a two point or more difference on a Judge's scorecard.
2. The definition of a dominating round is a fighter's ability to effectively strike, grapple and control his opponent.
3. A Judge may determine a round was dominating if a fighter was adversely affected by one of the following:
-knocked down from standing position by clean strike
-by submission attempt
-from a throw
-from clean strikes either standing or grounded.

-------

C. Point Totals
1. two fighters who draw are given a score of 10-10
2. the fighter who wins a round is given a score of 10-9
3.The fighter who dominates a round is given a score of 10-8 (a score of 10-7 is possible for a dominant round)
4.For each foul a fighter commits, a point is subtracted. This deduction can change a winning round to a draw. 9-9

-----

I'd call the first round 10-8, but I'd have to rewatch the last round to see if it could have been 10-8 the other way.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a 10-7. There would have to be multiple knockdowns and at the point you are thinking 10-7, the ref should have probably called the fight.

Middleweight bout: Kalib Starnes vs. Nate Quarry

Quarry defeats Starnes by Unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-24). The third score marks the second widest point margin in a three-round fight in UFC history, with the record belonging to a bout between Forrest Petz and Sammy Morgan, which was scored 30-23 Petz by one judge. This was due to the persistent backing off by Starnes, which caused significant boos by the crowd. Quarry stated afterwards that he was frustrated and mocked Starnes with a 'Running Man' gesture in the final round. Two days after the fight, Starnes was cut from the UFC. Starnes has subsequently complained that his contract with the UFC was oppressive and that he was not being properly compensated for his efforts.
Says 30-24, but then says 30-23. Last round has to be 10-7 round.
