Strikknucklez is on a distinguished road

Default Define "Freestyle Fighter"

So I come from a grappling base with little training in boxing ... Would that make me a "freestyle fighter" or a "grappler"?

I don't really get the difference. Since its MMA every fighter is kinda freestyling aren't they??...

What make someone like Rich Franklin designated as a "Freestyle fighter" when I see him more as a "striker/kickboxer" Whereas Liddell is intro'd as a "striker"but has his base in grappling and kickboxing...

Freestyle is more than you dont conform to any of the taught practises from the various disciplines. For instance Chucks striking skills is sort of freestyle because he carries his hands low and punches from strange angles at times which neither boxing or kickboxing really teaches.

As a basic I'd say its putting your own take onto things rather than just following the set teachings of a discipline.

In the early days it was basically knowing how to throw HUGE punches but not really know any martial arts...kinda like Tank Abbott. But nowadays it's more like you know all kinds of mixed martial arts, but just sorta improv a little here and there.

I agree it is kinda like you are the jack of all trades but master of none. GSP is probably one of the best example of this. He does kickboxing, wrestling, grappling, etc. Extemely well rounded fighter. Vera is the same way. Standing or on the ground these two guys are adaptable. In a few years we will see more fighters like these two. There are a few MMA schools who are teaching guys striking, wrestling and jiu jitsu. Fedor is probably the best freestyle fighter though he is an expert in Sambo.
