With rumors rampant about a possible upcoming opponent for Eric “Red” Schafer, the UFC has officially announced the next matchup for the state’s top light heavyweight; and like in the past, he will be pitted against one of the division’s rising talents.
First reported by mmajunkie.com, the UFC has announced that Schafer will meet Jason Brilz at “UFC on Versus 1: Vera vs. Jones”. The fight has been slotted on the event’s preliminary card, and is scheduled to take place on March 21, in Broomfield, Colorado.
The March matchup will be Schafer’s first since his unanimous decision loss to The Ultimate Fighter winner Ryan Bader. That loss snapped a career long four-fight win streak for Schafer, two of which were fought in the UFC.
Coming into the fight, Schafer will sport a record of 11-4-2, and will make his seventh appearance in the world’s most prestigious fighting organization. Already having faced other UFC veterans such as Bader, Michael Bisping, and Houston Alexander, Schafer will now face the experienced Jason Brilz.
Armed with a 17-2-1 record, Brilz has defeated such competition such as Tim Boetsch, Brad Morris, and Jason MacDonald. This will mark the fourth time that the Nebraskan has stepped inside of the octagon. His last fight, a unanimous decision loss to Eliot Marshall, came in September at UFC 103.
The matchup between Schafer and Brilz adds yet another great matchup to the completely free event that will air on Versus in March. The broadcast will mark the first time that the UFC will be televised on Versus, which is also the flagship for the WEC.
The night’s stacked card includes a main event bout between Jon Jones and Brandon Vera, a heavyweight slugfest between Junior Dos Santos and Gabriel Gonzaga, and a slew of other top fighters including Cheick Kongo, Anthony Johnson, and Spencer Fisher.
