| UFC 109 Fight Night Bonuses UFC 109 bonuses: Sonnen, Marquardt, Thiago, and Serra earn $60K each | MMAjunkie.com Quote:
LAS VEGAS – Chael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt, Paulo Thiago, and Matt Serra each earned $60,000 fight-night bonuses for their performances at Saturday's "UFC 109: Relentless" event.
Sonnen and Marquardt both earned "Fight of the Night" honors, while Thiago earned the "Submission of the Night" bonus and Serra earned the "Knockout of the Night" award.
MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) learned of the awards Saturday evening at the post-fight press conference, which followed UFC 109 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
It was middleweight Sonnen's moment in the sun as he faced Marquardt for the division's next contender slot, but that didn't mean "The Great" was willing to just give the fight away.
Marquardt had the Las Vegas crowd on the edge of its seat with a bottom-of-the-ninth guillotine choke attempt as Sonnen tried to cap a dominant performance. Sonnen, awash in blood after a Marquardt elbow sliced him open in the first round, proved up to the challenge and hung firm in the fight even as he was reversed and punished with punches at the fight's end.
Despite Marquardt's late efforts, the point deficit was too much to overcome. Sonnen took the fight 30-27 scores on all three judges' cards. The valiant effort earned both fighters an extra check for the effort.
Thiago, meanwhile, refused to give Mike Swick revenge after knocking out teammate Josh Koscheck at UFC 95.
Swick caught Thiago clean with his powerful right hand but walked right into a counterattack that left him struggling to stay conscious.
Thiago made matters worse when he locked in a D’arce choke in a subsequent ground scramble and put Swick to sleep. The move edged out Randy Couture's main-event win as the evening's best submission.
Finally, Serra won himself the knockout bonus – and a ticket to eat pasta – by shutting Frank Trigg up with several right hands in the first round of their welterweight bout.

lol, fuck me.. I had missed the Serra/Trigg fight (had to goto the store for bottled water) and planned to watch it on my DVR a tad later. Anyway, I would've never had guessed Serra KO'ed Trigg. I'll still watch it, though. But damn you, Sakara. Damn you, lol.
All deserving for sure, although the Sonnen/Marquardt fight was quite one-sided. FOTN should be given to guys who fought a very competitive fight through out, not a lopsided fight. Whatever, though.

Am I the only one who thought that Paulo Thiago deserved the sub of the night? That was a beautiful set up into a d'arce choke and it's much tougher to pull off.

Agreed I thought Thiago deserved SOTN so I'm glad ufc fixed this, assuming this report is true.
Man, Paulo is legit! I remember reading somewhere on here that he was drugged when he lost to Fitch. Is this true?

I want to see the other 2 fights. Emerson vs Nover and the controversial Hague vs Tuchscherer
I think Sonnen got FOTN only because he was an underdog. Sure it was 30-27 and pretty lopsided except for about 2 minutes out of the 15....but it was the most entertaining fight of the night and got me and the fans going. I heard no boos....Nate's sub attempts got a huge response from the crowd. This fight could have been the main event.
