| Scott Smith or Frank Shamrock could be next for ex-Strikeforce champ Cung Le Scott Smith or Frank Shamrock could be next for ex-Strikeforce champ Cung Le | MMAjunkie.com Quote:
Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le suffered the first loss of his MMA career this past December but could be back in the cage at a Strikeforce event planned for June.
Le (6-1 MMA, 6-1 SF) has already begun a campaign to rematch the man who handed him his first loss, Scott Smith, who scored a come-from-behind TKO victory when they met at "Strikeforce: Evolution."
But Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently told MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) that Le, who vacated the middleweight prior to the December fight due to a blossoming film career, could face former champion Frank Shamrock instead.
"The fight with Cung and Scott was an amazing fight," Coker said. "I know Cung would like that rematch, and I'm sure Scott would like that fight again at some point.
"We haven't locked that down yet, but that will be determined soon. If that fight happens, it will happen in late June."
Smith and Le have not returned to competition since that first clash.
Meanwhile, Shamrock, who serves as a fight analyst on Strikeforce's network TV broadcast team, has put his name in the hat for Le's return opponent.
"Last time I talked to Frank, he was asking me if he should fight Cung," Coker said.
Le broke Shamrock's arm (via kick) en route to winning the Strikeforce middleweight title at "Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Le" in March 2008. The fight was widely considered to be one of the best of the year.
At this point, a Shamrock vs. Le rematch simply is a possibility, according to Coker. Shamrock is also rumored to have agreed to a fight with Showtime commentator and former UFC champion Pat Miletich.
Le, a former Shan Shou kickboxing champion, made his mixed-martial-arts debut in March 2006.
Strikeforce currently has a "few dates on hold" for the planned June card but nothing is finalized as of yet. Top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko may return to the promotion at the event for his long-rumored fight with Fabricio Werdum.
Next up for the promotion is "Strikeforce Challengers VII: Johnson vs. Mahe," which takes place March 26 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.
| Pointless all the way around. True he was winning against Scott Smith but to rematch them takes away from that moment in MMA history. And him versus Frank Shamrock? Why? Who cares?

Scott Smith/Cung Le is the last fight that needed an immediate rematch. However, I'm totally down for watching Smith KTFO Le again

I'll start paying attention when it's Ken vs. Cung Le. That'd be one ridiculously glorious freakshow there!

Both those fights are full of "meh". As deep as their MW division is, those are the options? How bout Lee vs.....
Mayhem
Lawler
Manhoef
At least it's something different. Hell I would rather see Smith/Shamrock then Lee rematch either one. At least thats something different.

I'd much rather see le take on mayhem. That's about it. Manhoef would knock his damn head off IMO

both are boring rematches that i have no interest in watching. cung le and frank are both too afraid to fight any real competition. both only fight hand picked opponents, and cung lost a fight that was made for him to easily win.

Both are completly pointless rematches. I mean these are the last two people he has fought in the span of what, two years? And rather then fight anyone else, he wants one of them?? Sooo stupid. Throw him in there with Lawler so he can get knocked out again.
