| Overeem vs Rogers, Arlovski vs Bigfoot Now Official In May Overeem vs. Rogers, Arlovski vs. "Bigfoot" official for May 15 Strikeforce event in St. Louis | MMAjunkie.com Quote:
A pair of previously reported heavyweights bouts is now official for April 17 with today's official announcement of "Strikeforce St. Louis: Heavy Artillery."
As expected UFC heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (32-11 MMA, 2-0 SF) meets Brett Rogers (10-1 MMA, 2-1 SF) in the night's headliner, and former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski (15-7 MMA, 0-1 SF) meets former EliteXC title-holder Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (13-2 MMA, 0-1 SF) in the co-headliner.
Today's release didn't state if Overeem vs. Rogers will be a title fight, and sources close to the competitors today told MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) that an official decision hasn't been made about the championship status of the bout. Strikeforce officials could not be reached for comment.
The event takes place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis and airs on Showtime.
MMAjunkie.com first reported the Overeem vs. Rogers fight earlier this month. Overeem initially said the fight would be a non-title affair, though he later told other outlets his belt, in fact, would be on the line. A few days later, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAjunkie.com a decision hadn't been made either way and that an announcement is forthcoming that "might be something that people are not expecting."
Overeem has not defended his title since November 2007, when he won the vacant belt by defeating Paul Buentello at "Strikeforce: Four Men Enter, One Man Survives." Since winning the title, Overeem has competed overseas, primarily with Japan's DREAM promotion, while extending his current undefeated streak to eight (which includes seven stoppage wins and a no-contest with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic).
Rogers, meanwhile, looks to rebound from the first loss of his career, which also came in the highest-profile bout of his career. In November, Rogers met famed heavyweight and former PRIDE champ Fedor Emelianenko in the main event of Strikeforce's first-ever CBS-televised event. Rogers proved a game opponent but suffered an eventual second-round TKO loss. Prior to the defeat, he had 10 straight wins via strikes, and eight had come in the first round.
In the night's co-headliner, Arlovski fights for the first time since Strikeforce's initial St. Louis show, which took place in June 2009. There, he suffered a 22-second TKO loss to Brett Rogers, which followed a first-round knockout to Fedor Emelianenko at "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" six months prior. Prior to the back-to-back losses, the former UFC superstar had posted five consecutive wins and reemerged as one of the world's top-five heavyweight fighters.
He can get his career back on track against Silva, whose six-fight win streak recently came to an end with a close but unanimous decision loss to Fabricio Werdum at Strikeforce's November 2009 debut on CBS. Silva posted the win streak with now-defunct EliteXC promotion (where he defeated Justin Eilers for the title) and World Victory Road's Japanese-based Sengoku event series.

Maybe they are stripping Overeem of the title and holding a mini-tournament? Rogers/Overeem winner vs Fedor/Werdum winner for the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship. This format would prob be a better sell and generate bigger ratings, so they might have gave Overeem a few million reasons not to care about being stripped of the title. They just need to make sure they have things worked out with M1 before they announce it an make it official. Thats about the only thing that makes sense to me if Rogers/Overeem is not for the title.
Either way Im stoked for these fights, Bigfoot/Arlovski should be damn good and Rogers/Overeem is gonna be crazy title or not.

This seems like a bad fight for Rogers. The only way I see him winning is if he decides to take Overeem down and go for the TKO. Rogers doesn't really have much wrestling, so this might not be easy, but he is at a much smaller disadvantage on the ground then he is standing up. He certainly looked to have some powerful gnp against Fedor, but standing up, he will certainly be outmatched.

The best thing I can think of doing is actually holding a 6 Man Heavyweight tournament after stripping Overroids of his title.
Arlovski/Silva
Rodgers/AO
The winner of this four man tournament Vs the winner of Fedor/Werdum for the Heavyweight Title.
This would be the best way to handle the situation. This sets up for multiple matches we want to see.
Arlovski/Rodgers II
Arlovski/Overeem
I don't see Silva winning this fight, as long as Arlovski is prepared.
From there, we will see either
Arlovski/Fedor II
Rodgers/Fedor II
Overeem/Fedor
Quite honestly, Werdum isn't winning this fight against Fedor. Wedum is the worst of the 6 heavyweights I've listed.
At the very worst, we get to see:
Silva/Rodgers
Silva/Overeem
This sets up a lot of exciting potential for matches. I really think a well-prepared Arlovski who doesn't throw a flying knee has the best chance to beat Fedor.
I really want to see AA/Rogders II and then AA/Fedor II. Overeem doesn't excite me. I'll never respect him, as anyone who knows anything about steroids knows...

it has to be for the title. anything else at this point is just mickey mouse i know i know coming off of a lose and getting a title shot is only acceptable when its filling in for an injury ( justin eilers vs AA, penn vs hughs) but to have the champ fight after 2 years and in a non title fight..............sucks. and if he loses your promotions loses all crediblity. you could strip him and set up a tourny, but he is fighting now, kinda bullshit to strip him after you sign him for a fight when you wouldnt strip him for the past 2 years. if this is none title fight ill fully expect an announcent in the center of the cage by donald duck that disney is now the ower and operated of strikeforce
