fighters should be trying to finish fights anyway but if their just not that kind of fighter such as jon fitch who will just out class fighters with wrestling and as its put "the jon fitch grind" then to bad for the other fights, if you dont like "the fitch grind" then stop it.

KO or Submission does not = a good fight.
While I agree that a fighter should be trying to finish his opponent I dont believe that it makes them a bad or boring fighter because they didnt. I appreciate when a fighter has implimented a specific game plan to nulify his opponent. With MMA getting more diverse and better fighters coming all the time these guys need to be smarter and more well prepared than their opponent.
Looking at this weekend:
We saw some awesome BJJ from Miller and Bocek, Palhares (obviously), Batman.
It wasnt like GSP didnt try to finish the fight. Sure his BJJ was looking a little sloppy (relative term, lol) but anyone that didnt have Hardy's heart would have tapped.
Fitch was methodical and a little boring but telling Fitch not to grind his opponents out with his wrestling would be like telling Anderson not to out box anyone because they cant protect themselves from it.
Spectacular KO's and Submissions are awesome but I dont think that they make the sport what it is. I love wars just as much as I like finishes. In fact there are some fights that I wish would never stop.
Just my thoughts!

I agree with One-Way mostly. I also think that giving bonuses for finishing fights might lead to more injuries.

There already is one. The crowd bonus. Most fighters love to finish fights because the crowd loves it, but some don't have the knockout power. You saw GSP apologize to the crowd at UFC 111 for not finishing the fight. I think they all want to finish fights.

The number of yes votes this is getting is troubling.. Maybe I am old school but MMA fighters shouldn't need an incentive to finish a fight.

A finish is almost always a more definitive way to end a fight. So if there is a win bonus, why not a finish bonus? There are already bonuses for FoN and such, and we see plenty of fighters caring more about their records then winning these bonuses. In fact, there are very few fighters who actively seek these bonuses. So people saying that Jon Fitch will start losing because he will fight with reckless abandon trying to finish fights to slightly increase his purse is a huge exageration imo.
The sport is made for entertainment; if every fight went to decision based on ground control, hardly anyone would watch. If fighters have some incentive to try to win fights definitively, why not? Especially for people who are not fighting in the main event; a lot of them are under paid, and anything that gives a fighter who puts on a good performance more money sounds good to me. Sure, a lot of people were happy watching GSP control Hardy for 5 rounds while going for no risk/low success rate submissions, and Hardy made it a little more exciting by refusing to tap, but it was one of the least exciting title fights I've seen in a while. Jon Fitch controlling Saunders for 3 rounds added very little to the card. Imo the fighters that really made that card were Diaz, Palhares, Carwin, and Pelegrino/Camoes.

Finish of the night would already be covered by KO/Submission of the night.

It's not Finish of the Night- it would simply be a bonus paid to any fighter who KO'd/sub'd for victory.
And that was my point from before: to actually alter the fighter's behavior (IE: to entice a fighter who normally isn't especially agressive), the amount would have to be pretty substantial, meaning this would never be economically feasible.
But I like the idea- the dudes who already go balls-to-the-wall would go even crazier.
That's good tv.

I dont understand.
There are already bonuses for KO of the night and submission of the night.
What exactly means a bonus for finishing the fight? That absolutely all fighters that win the fight not by desicion will receive extra money?
No, I think with KO of the night and sub of the night is more than enough.

great idea, case in point is
lyoto machida got lambasted for not finishing fights ,
with no incentive given to him but perhaps someone coralled him
to finish or he would be cut when the time came,
maybe anderson would have attempted to finish leites when leites would
jump on the ground,
the lay and pray technique (very boring but effective) might be overcome
with this, so can cpt americas hug and kiss technique ( again very boring but
effective).just depends how much of a bonus is given?
