he did seem to make alot of mistakes. the mir stoppage was way too late !. also the thing that made it seem worse then it really was, was the fact that joe rogan pointed his bad refing so many times. if rogan hadn't of mentioned it then i dont think there would be such a massive fuss. but i have to say he has got to be up their with mazzagatti as the worst ufc refs !!!

While I don't disagree that Dan Miragliotta was far from the perfect ref Saturday night, I recall thinking just a few years ago, that Herb Dean was the worst possible human being to be called on to referee a MMA match.
Some of Herb's botched calls were epic. Late stoppages to the point that 5 strikes were delivered after a fighter was clearly out. Early stand ups when the fighters were engaged in a heated scramble.
Yet two Sunday's ago on Versus, Joe Rogan called Herb one of the best and mentioned that Herb is good because he fights. And I have to admit, over time Herb has improved as a MMA Ref.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, just so happens that Joe Rogan gets paid to share his with us. Referees can do better and when called out on it, they should improve. I view this similar to a fighter getting better, with each match, the ref should also be looking for ways to improve.
This is not a perfect system by any means. Any time you have human beings making judgment calls, there will always be room for criticism and improvement.
Let's just hope ol Danny Boy reviews/studies the tape like a fighter and strives to be better the next time.

Anyone else notice that Joe was counting how long it took him to call the fight while it was going in slow motion? SO it made it seem even worse. Not trying to say he didn't call it late but Joe just made it seem worse by doing it in slow motion.

He would have at least 1-2 Early Stoppages on every PPV.
I absolutely despised it when he would ref a really good fight because I knew sooner or later it would get called too early.
He's really gotten his shit together as of lately though.
Mazzagatti, Mirgliotta, & Fettuccine Alfredo are definitely the worst Refs right now.

Miragliotta reminds me of Larry Landless, which is not a good sign. However, I'd still take him any day of the week over Mazzagatti. Mario and Big John are hands down the most stellar refs...

Well well well, for those who remeber me, i was very active in topics from july 07-aug 09, after that i havent had any internet at my house due to a ton of BS, but i am back =D
Glad to see this topic up and going, i agree with a lot of you i used to think herb dean was a terrible ref, he used to be know for his way early stops, ala tito ken 2, witch started my hate for him, over the years he has become a great ref, but part of me still worrys if ill ever see the bad herb come out again
Dan made a bunch of mistakes, his main one obviously being the mir fight, but he started listing to the drunken idiots who wanted to see a stand up fight, and instead of letting the fighters work and advance as they were doing.. he stands them up...
Its one thing if your just laying up against the cage in a clintch trying to get some air, or laying on top of your oppent doing the same thing, but these guys were working landing good shots and nope, lets stand it up because some drunken idiots want it that way, this isnt boxing, if thats what you wanna see go watch boxing or youtube some street fights.
I know ufc has nothing to do with who refs thier fights its the commission in each state who does it, but if im the UFC im filing some complaints and finding a way to keep Miragliotta away from the UFC, there are way to many good fights comming up that i dont wanna see this guy F up.
Sorry for the long essay rant guys haha, just hve had a lot to say over the last few months and im trying to get it all out now haha.

Holy shit! That'a the longest run-on sentence I have ever fucking read! Anyway, Dan Miragliotta blows. He's awful. Remember when he eye-gouged Heath prior to fighting Brock? I didn't even watch this event and can say with certainty he made 6-8 bad calls.

Im not saying dan didn’t make mistakes, because I feel that he did. But lets no forget the being a ref is a hard job. If you stop the fight to early fighters bitch. If you stop the fight to late someone gets hurt. I guess what im saying is it easier to go wow that ref f’ed up. And look at everything he did wrong when you watch the tape, when you weren’t in the moment.
