| Muay Thai kicks
I just had a question about muay thai kicks, I did tkd for years (i now do bjj) so i'm used to the chambering of the knee and rotating the hips and snapping the kick out and then back. With muay thai there is no chamber correct? you lift your leg to the side then whip you leg around and turn your hips over smashing into your target? it's obviously a powerful but when i do it it seems slower and easier for someone to catch my leg. Can anyone give me some tips or pointer on how to throw muay thai kicks more effictive, thanks

Practice Practice Practice.... plus a good thing to do is when you make contact with your opponent with your shin. Push off your opponent with your shin for more of an impact. You have to keep doing drills to get the speed also you can do them Dutch style but they won't be as effective (hard hitting) but they will be quicker. Plus I have been hit by TKD kicks and they don't hurt like Muay Thai kicks do.

TKD kicks hit like butterfly wings compared to a Muay Thai kick.

Thanks, I know TKD is nothing compared to muay thai, but i want to be able to use both kicks, to mix up speed and power to surprise my oppoent. So does my leg just fire straight from the ground? or do i lift my hip to the side and the in one smooth motion pivot and whip my hips over powerfully swining my shin into the target?

Now have the intention of going all away around but know you are going to hit your opponent and when you do after the impact push back with your shin into fighting postion. This is frickin hard to explain with only text...lol

I wouldn't be too concerned about people catching your leg. You can actually turn a slower kick into an advantage. I like to start kicking low at the legs (inside and outside) cause even if my kicks are slow they are too low to really be caught. After a couple of effective leg kicks people start dropping their hands to block or to attempt to catch your kick. At this point it is easier to fake a leg kick and go high to an unprotected head. Even if your kick is slow to the head your opponent has his hands to low to effectively react. Only disclaimer is that experienced/ disciplined fighters will not drop hands, they will simply check your kicks with their shins and that can hurt like a bitch.

Like stated earlier, use the shin instead of the foot. Turn the hips hard and in a small circle then lock the hips just before impact and kick through your opponent. Plan on rotating 360 when using the low or roundhouse kick. Thrust kicks are self explanatory.
