It'll be talked about. But, I'm firmly in the camp that think it's not the end of the world or going to set MMA back 50 years. It didn't advance the sport, but nor did it do irreparable damage.

yea my biggest worry was what the mainstream media will say about the sport rather than mayhem's well-being. all they did tonight was give places like new york city and toronto reason to keep the sport outlawed.

It depends on if Jim Rome, Around The Horn, Pardon The Interuption, shows like that decide to pick it up. THe best thing that can happen for MMA is if something crazy in the sports world occurs tomorrow.
"Alex Rodriguez blows out knee on airplane, out for season".
Something like that happens, and nobody will care.

What happened today was bad, but it is not like it doesn't happen in Baseball(a non combat sport), Hockey, Boxing, ect. The goons should be dealt with just as in anyother sport and that be the end of it, it isn't going to be the end all be all of getting mma in these states especially since it wasn't even the biggest promotion.

.....Nick and Nate Diaz are such clowns and need to get their shit together. They are not helping their career's one bit with this kind of behavior. Both of them are gonna waste their talent if they keep this shit up.
.... I wonder if Nick will ever get it when it comes to being respectful in both victory and defeat ? He clearly is the most talented of the two and should be in the UFC,but never will if he continue's acting like this.

Due in no small part to the nonsense that goes on in the TUF house, MMA is closely linked to this kind of bullshit with the mainstream. This is unfortunate, and it dilutes the integrity of the sport, but I feel like it's almost at a point where race fans need to see a crash to feel they get their money's worth, and casual fans need to see bullshit.
It's unfortunate that the "Arts" component of MMA has been downplayed by most orgs. It should be called MMMD, for mixed martial melodrama. Quote:

Much like with Penn, I just compartmentalize his skills from the stuff he does outside of sanctioned bouts, and it makes him easier to watch.

IMO, there have been equally ugly (or uglier) fiascos in other sports as well. Oregon/Boise St.'s brawl last year, Ron Artest losing his mind in Detroit...the list goes on and on. Of course its bad for our public image cuz its still "new" to mainstream media. But we need to realize there are those that no matter how much professionalism is shown, they choose to magnify the negatives regardless how isolated it is. This story will run its course and disappear.

However, MMA is new and controversial (in the eyes of the non-fan) and will be placed under a much brighter spotlight than any similar event in another sport. Hell, somebody died by trampling a couple of years ago at a black-friday sale, but that wasn't as big of a deal as this was because this will be considered a sign that fighters are animals and not athletes. This debacle makes an MMA outsider think that MMA is like real-life WWE. It is a big deal what MMA outsiders think, because most people are outsiders now, and for the sport to grow we need to bring them into the fold. Let's hope that horrible display won't make them too reluctant.....
On the other hand, maybe MMA picked up thousands of new devotees from the WWE bleachers last night........
