Yeah that Royve Gracie special on Spike TV was good. Ken trying to weasel out saying he didnt tap because the ref didnt see it.... that was good stuff. Royce would make guys submit from the weirdest angles and positions, it was just unreal. These huge guys probably thought they'd kill the little guy but the little guy prevailed. Royce is a true legend.

As a 180lb guy I loved watching Royce.
I watched that thing back in 93 with some buddies and I remember them seeing Ken and Royce, then all I heard was Ken is going to kill that dude!!! 1 min later...Royce choked him out.
He and his family are why we are watching UFC and Pride right now.

I too saw the special on spike the other day, and wow, absolutely blown away. I don't think anybody will be able to do what he did again, because people have learned how well rounded you need to be. But man it was incredible to watch the guy.
Why did he always look so grumpy after his fights?

| Two things
Royce and the Gracies definitely have earned thier respect. But there are two qualifiers to that statement.
First, the early UFC's were to some extent an info-mercial for Gracie Ju Jitsu, because Art Davies used to consult with Horion before they signed anyone up to fight. Royce never fought either Marco Ruas or Oleg Taktarov. From what I've read, Horion actually tried to pass off Taktarov as a low level fighter, so that Art wouldn't sign him up. And Royce quit just before Ruas entered the UFC scene.
Second, Rickson never fought any of the greats of his time: Mark Kerr, Mark Coleman, or Marco Ruas.
Still, their achievement is unparallelled, and they opened the eyes of the martial arts world.

yeah i have alot of respect for the man, i feel he is the reason that people started cross training so much, and yes if it wasnt for him and people like him the ufc wouldnt be what it is today, and watching him ffight 3 or 4 times in one night against guys that had up to 100 pounds on him was unreal, i was just shocked when i seen what matt did to him but i guess its the evolution of sport but still have alot of respect for him

While Royce would most likely have dominated any judo player of his time, it's conceivable people there would recognize his moves quicker and be able to neutralize them quicker than the fighters in the first UFC's, who all seemed hell-bent on proving how dominant their stand-up game was.
Rickson, however, fought some of the top Japanese fighters and won handily, though.

When Coleman was dominating the UFC their were no Good JuJitsu practitioners. Both of them don't have good sub defense. In fact, a good match would be Kimo vs Coleman, I think Kimo would knock Coleman out IMO because he has a better stand up game and soso ground game from what I've heared.
Ruas would have gave Roycw all he could handle, I can't see Royce beating him at any time. Ruas is just too well rounded.
