| Respect for Royce
Although I don't really think he is competitive anymore, I find it amazing what Royce did during the early UFC's. It's old news now, but if you go back and watch the old UFC'S you can't help but be blown away. After I competed in a Jiu-Jitsu tournament and fought 4 times in one day I have a whole new level of respect for Royce fighting 4 times in a night. I was totally out of it after 4 matches, I could only imagine what it would be like to go full contact (no gloves) against guys with 20-75 pounds on you, 4 times in a night with your family's rep on the line and winning every match in style. That's truely amazing and I just thought I would make a thread to mention it. WAR ROYCE!

When it was style vs. style he definitely backed up his claims.
I believe that once he proved what style was the ultimate in 1 on 1, that it forced guys to transition to MMA, they had their staple style, but had to learn his to not lose on the ground, and to win on the ground.
The guy really is the grandfather of MMA.

Royce definitely paved the way for all the fighters we see out there today. He changed the entire way the world saw fighting. He's given guys like me the chance to train in such an effective discipline (Gracie Barra baby) and better ourselves on a fighting level AND a personal level as well.

Each founder of each discipline of each Martial Art believed they were best, or they combined different martial arts to become what they thought was the best. Many broke off from the original style of Martial Art to improve what they thought was a better form.
In 1993 the challenge was given to all comers, and then defended to show the world which discipline could come out on top.
At that time the Gracie family then chose Royce to defend their version of BJJ because he was a medium sized man, who wasn’t a big dominating oversized human to prove Grace Jui Jitsu was dominant regardless of the size of the dog on the fight, and they showed the world and proved correct.

Just imagine if Rickson would have entered those tourneys. Oh my God. Royce was just so good, you found yourself rooting for someone just to give him a run for his money. I loved the Hackney and the Kimo fights for that exact reason. I still laugh at him choking out Shamrock and that look he gave him when Ken tried to act like he didn't tap.

Buncha Royce fights were on last night. Ken admitted tapping after Royce gave him his "stern" face. |
