| Shinya Aoki: Breaking Kawajiri’s Bone Not Enough, “I Was Hoping For an Open-Fracture” Shinya Aoki: Breaking Kawajiri’s Bone Not Enough, “I Was Hoping For an Open-Fracture” | 5thRound.com – UFC News, Strikeforce and MMA News, UFC 117 Play-by-Play Results Quote:
While most would be happy with collecting a submission victory over a fighter as respected as Tatsuya Kawajiri, Dream lightweight champ Shinya Aoki was hoping for more.
“When I caught him and tried to submit him, I heard a loud crackle sound. He did not tap so I thought ‘Ok, this match just became a death-fight’ and I was going to destroy his leg,” Aoki told SportsNavi (translated by MiddleEasy). “I knew Kawajiri never taps so I could not win without breaking his bone.
“I was hoping for an open-fracture.”
Aoki’s achilles lock submission at Dream.15 was the second time in his last three outings where the controversial grappler left his foe severely wounded. The jiu jitsu wizard caught Mizuto Hirota in a hammerlock in the opening ticks of their match-up this past December. Although Aoki probably/most likely/definitely knew he was in position to break Hirota’s arm with the greatest of ease, Hirota refused to tap and …
Sandwiched between the bone-cracking wins was a unanimous decision thrashing to Strikeforce lightweight king Gilbert Melendez in April. Like most men, Aoki needed the guidance of a strong woman to set him straight … or wake his inner demon.
“After I lost, many people blamed me, but she helped me through it all,” Aoki said of his fiancé. “The people who mocked me in my fight versus Melendez, I wanted to kill them all. Even in this fight, too many people said ‘Kawajiri would win!’. I felt like telling these people ‘Go to hell!’
Although “Tobikan Judan” was pushing a Dream.16 rematch against Melendez, Sherdog.com spoke with Gilbert’s pops on Monday and said a September bout would be too soon for them. However, Team Melendez has every intention on granting Aoki a mulligan on his home turf.

I don't like him... great BJJ but nothing else... he's arrogant as hell... i wish i could roll with him and pull out an easy heel hook like a bitch and see how he likes it... and then brag and say i was hoping he would never walk again

Aoki is always fun to watch, I can understand cranking the submission since his opponent wasn't tapping but hoping for an open-fracture is just wrong.
I'm looking forward to seeing a rematch between him and Melendez in a ring this time.

Kind of a toss up. Hirota and Kawajiri both had no intention of tapping. Kawajiri had to tap. It's not like after he heard it crackle Kawajiri tapped. He had it broke, then the Crushed tried to heel kick him in the face a few times, and he just kept the hold and kept cranking and tightening it.
It's not like he went into this fight intending to break his opponent's foot/ankle. I think he is a little upset that his opponents don't tap and he is forced to injure them.
If you are known as one of the best grapplers/submission artists in the world and your opponents don't respect your skills (by refusing to tap) I would be pissed too. And maybe warning people by trying to come off like a badass, might discourage the next guy that thinks he can get out of a Aoki submission attempt.

I have no problem with anyone breaking an opponents bone if the guy doesn't tap, but to do it and then be upset that it wasn't a worse injury is a completely classless move and void of any kind of honor or respect to your opponent.

My thoughts exactly. I have no problem with him breaking his foot, I believe it's his opponents responsibility to tap if he feels the hold is sunk in deep and he is unable to escape it.
I would understand Aoki being pissed at him for not tapping as it can be perceived as disrespectful.
But yes, hoping for the injury to be worse than it was is not something I want to see in this sport, no matter how much you dislike the guy you're fighting.

Hey, I say let him do what he's goin to do. If he wants to play rough, then eventually someone is goin to play rough with him and he'll learn a valuable lesson. It's a shame, he's a talented guy, I like his attitude most of the time, it's entertaining but damn can he come across like a douche. IMHO.

If your opponent doesn't tap and you are forced to crank the submission to the bones breaking point, then you gotta do what you gotta do... It's the other guy's fault for being to stubborn to tap. However, nobody should do it with such arrogance and classlessness as Aoki. If you break a bone, get up and say "you know, i really wish i didn't have to do that"... not "DAMNIT I wanted bone shrapnel to fly into the audience." Very tasteless IMO.
It reminds me of the old mike tyson, where in his post-fight interview talked about how dissapointed he was since he was hoping to jam the guy's nose bones into his brain.
