| Silva will be waiting if GSP can make the weight Quote:
It could be the biggest fight in UFC history.
It could break all the records.
And according to UFC president Dana White, everyone keeps asking for it, so he might just have to give it to them.
The longstanding fight fans have been asking for is to see widely regarded pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva match up with the fighter closely nipping at his heels for the top spot in UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. The fight has been brought up to White for years, and both camps have expressed interest.
Silva's manager, Ed Soares, says the Brazilian champion is all about big fights, and that means bringing in whoever is going to present the biggest challenge.
The biggest question surrounding the potential mega match-up right now is what weight class the two fighters would face off at? Silva rules the 185-pound division, while St-Pierre is a multi-time welterweight champion.
"First of all, I think to protect both champions, I think it's smarter to do it at a catchweight possibly, but who knows? Anderson... I don't think he could. Maybe he could, I'm not sure, make it down to 170. I think it's much easier and more likely that Georges goes up to 185," Soares told MMAWeekly Radio recently.
Silva has fluctuated in weight a lot over the years. The one-time 167-pound champion in Shooto, Silva fought at 175 pounds when for Rumble on the Rock, at his natural weight class at 185 pounds, and has also made a couple of appearances at 205 pounds, knocking out both James Irvin and former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin.
Soares doesn't rule out Silva's freakish ability to put on and take off weight, and believes that the potential dynamite of promoting a two weight class champion could be just the formula that gets the superstars in the Octagon together.
"Could Anderson do it? He probably could," Soares commented about Silva. "It would be interesting. It would be a great promotion. If either one could make each other's weight class, it would be a great promotion to be the first guy holding two belts at the same time."
When it comes to Silva's career, it's all about the big fight, and Soares isn't in the business of turning down opportunities for his fighters.
"Tell GSP to make weight, we'll be waiting," Soares said simply.
Both fighters are occupied presumably for the rest of 2010 with Silva facing Chael Sonnen in August, and St-Pierre defending his belt against Josh Koscheck most likely in December. If both are victorious, the clash of two of the best ever in MMA could be the biggest fight in UFC history.

Soares is an idiot. As GSP is the smaller fighter it's GSP who will be waiting for Silva "if he can make weight". This reminds me of the time Soares was talking about time travel.
GSP's mentality on putting on weight has been well documented. He won't do it unless it's a permanent move and he can put the muscle on properly.

I'm going with GSP on this one. Obviously, they both have incredible (maybe unmatched) skills, but I think GSP has a HUGE edge in the mental game. I think that'll be the difference.

He has already said this on many occassions. Anyways GSP is behind Silva in the P4P debate more importantly its GSP who has losses in the UFC and should bare the burden of coming to Silva.

Would love to see if Anderson could make 170 and fight GSP at his weight level. Pulling for GSP all the way.

A catch-weight bout makes the most sense. GSP cuts to 170; Silva cuts to 185. Have the match contested at 179. Neither fighter will have to greatly alter their training to accommodate the deviation from their current class. Also, since neither seems likely to compete in the opposing weight class on a permanent basis anytime soon, there really is no reason to have a championship match. No one stands to lose anything more than bragging rights if they meet in between classes with no official title on the line.
I really can't think of any other fight I'd be more excited to see at this juncture. Should be a classic.
Personally, I believe Silva has the superior tools. His standup is arguably the most polished in the entire game. GSP seems to be a tad gun-shy of trading with someone with good hands since the Serra loss. Anderson's also very proficient in the clinch-just ask Rich Franklin. I also don't recall Anderson attempting a submission to no avail. His blackbelt credentials couldn't be questioned. The Spider has also got the size and reach advantage. All together, I feel he's the more complete fighter with too many areas of superiority for GSP to overcome. That's not to say it won't be one hell of a great fight.

i mean styles make fights... and my opinion of this fight will be heavily influenced by the Chael/Silva fight because i think wrestling is the key to beating Silva.. but we shall see what Sonnen can do in terms of winning multiple rounds and even surviving 5 rounds (even if his ass is beat) with Silva trying the whole time....
now if there is a chink in the armor exposed then i think GSP will have a pretty legitimate shot at winning more times out(6.5) of 10.. but if Chael is stopped and vintage Silva comes out then id give GSP like 2/10 times of beating him

GSP should move UP to fight Anderson, not the other way around. GSP didn't move down a weight class to fight BJ Penn, you don't hear about Shogun cutting down to 185 to fight Anderson. When Lyoto was champion, he wanted to win 5 defenses then move UP to fight Brock. There is a long history of a dominant fighter moving UP in weight classes to challenge himself, you only move DOWN in weight when you are being outclassed or outmuscled by bigger fighters.
The idea of Silva moving down to challenge GSP is ridiculous because Silva is the more dominant fighter for a longer period of time, the #1 P4P fighter and the champion of a higher weight class. GSP fighting Silva is a challenge for GSP, but its just an opponent for Anderson. Anderson needs to move up in weight to challenge himself, not move down to beat up even smaller fighters.
