I dont really think race has much to do with it though... At least I dont think it has anything to do with it.
I hate Pride girls though, they're some of the ugliest mutant asian women on the planet, and I never understand why people say they're hotter than the UFC women.
I love how people laugh at the American fans supporting fighters like Hughes and call them stupid rednecks, but it is ok for a fan to like sakuraba, or gomi. If a fan says they're rice cookers, or pokemon, immediately the nuthuggers jump all over you. There is such a double standard amongst Pride fans in MMA. |
first off murrary is of moroccan dissent... a country in northern africa and tito is half white if you didn't know this...
and aren't matt hughes fans rednecks? haha i'm just playing.. i like hughes too but calling japanese fighters pokemon and rice cookers.. yeah man that's pretty god damn ignorant... and you wonder why people would get pissed at you saying that... hold up, maybe you are just an ignorant redneck, inbred bastard... just a thought....
and the pride girls are fine... but so are the ufc girls.. can't we just appreicate fine females when we see them and not worry abou where they're from?

ususally it doesn't make a difference for me but if its two fighters i don't really know much about and one of them is brazilian, i usually root for that guy just because i love BJJ so much. but i think with the less loyal and MMA educated fan, race does matter. like i remember watching UFC 62 with a couple people at my house and i'm really into MMA and my friends are mostly casual fans coaxed into goin in on the ppv with me. when kongo came out they were all rooting for him b/c he looks like, and was promoted, as a "big, scary, black, knockout machine."

race dont matter to me as i said before, i pay for the fights and the fighters i like are not based on color or anything its based on skill and if there funny just things like that, i like tito cuz hes cocky and idk just like him, rampage he is funny and good, chuck cuz he has fun knockouts forrest because he is just funny skill kinda sloppy, to me it dont matter if they bring it then its awsome if not im going to bitch no matter what or who they are, by the way anderson is freakin awsome i just dont like that he dont speak english, but im sure he will sooner or later but either way his fights are awsome i could care less if he talked just put on the show

I guess until they get a white, bald, 30 year old, out of shape white guy that fights MMA, I will not be able to identify with any of the fighters.
I would imagine Tom Seleck is a huge Don Frye fan. He can identify with the mustache.

My question to you all is:
Does race factor in to your decision to watch a certain organization or a specific fight?
For me personally, it has never been a factor. Other than finding it interesting when a fighter is from a place that is not well known for producing MMA fighters (BJ Penn - Hawaii, Kultar "Black Mamba" Gill - India, etc..) it has never entered my mind.
I generally pick my favorites based on their style of fighting more than anything else. Does someone's race or skin color affect your choices? | well in the united states, race does not become a factor due to the fact that all the drunk idiots dont care if the fighter is white black pink or yellow, all these drunk idiots care about is one color, the color red (blood) and green (money)

Not for me. I just like to see the most skilled guys in the cage/ring go at it.

| Race
While race may not be a factor for most people on this board, obviously it is still an issue, or this thread would not have come up at all.
I'm white, but I grew up in Puerto Rico in the sixties. I can honestly say that in PR race was never an issue: Puerto Ricans are a racial mix----some of them appear Caucasian, some of them appear Negro, and some of them appear as a mix of the two, but, while Puerto Ricans recognize the difference, they don't attach much importance to it. When I came to the states, of course, I noticed a difference. In the US, in the sixties and seventies, while I wouldn't call anyone a racist, there was definitely a cultural prejudice at work: the black dudes hung out with the black dudes, and the white dudes hung out with the white dudes. Nowadays, 20 years later, we've come a long way to growing out of that cultural prejudice, thanks to the media and our public school system.
What's the moral of my story? People generally are emotionally prejudiced toward what they're used to seeing. If I grew up in Japan, in my opinion, it's perfectly normal that I would have a natural inclination to root for a Sakuraba or a Fujita. If I grew up in Brazil, it would be normal for me to cheer Vanderlei or Nogeira. I identify with those people: they are me, in a way. In the US, we've come a long way: color is not a factor, and we can identify with people of other races, but most Americans still see color, whereas the average Puerto Rican does not.

I think naturally you're going to cheer a guy from your home town or country, but to decide to not watch a fight based on races is very KKK. Maybe it's because I'm white, but I don't look at anything based on colour. I dont' even notice colour most of the time.
I'm seriously not trying to stir the pot, but I feel nonwhites play the race card way too much.

Race doesn't matter to me at all. I love fighters of all different races whether it is Georges St. Pierre, Andrei Arlovski, Yushin Okami, Melvin Guillard, Din Thomas, Rich Franklin, Chuck Liddell, Karo Parisyan, Diego Sanchez or whoever.
