Nate Marquardt: “Anderson Silva Better Not Let Chael Sonnen…”
Written by Tim Ngo
July 23rd, 2010
Although Anderson Silva’s ears are completely congested from all the verbal venom Chael Sonnen has spewed his way, the middleweight king may want to hear what his former foe Nate Marquardt has to say. After all, he learned firsthand at UFC 109 that you can’t fall into Sonnen’s trap.
“If Chael’s able to get Anderson down, then he’s going to be able to lay on him and win a decision that way,” Marquardt said on The Fight Show. “If Anderson uses his footwork right, which he has very good footwork, I think it’ll be tough for Chael to take him down.”
The Colorado native believes his lack of movement allowed Sonnen to dominate their critical clash. Unfortunately for “Nate the Great,” the shocking upset loss cost him another shot at the brass ring.
“My mindset going into the fight was, ‘I’m going to knock this guy out.’ If you go forward trying to knock a guy like Chael out, that’s where you’re going to get taken down,” stated Marquardt. “I know for a fact that my wrestling is as good as his, if not better. I just didn’t get a chance to defend any of the takedowns because he would get in so deep because of what I was doing wrong.
“I had no chance to defend.”
Sonnen’s gameplan is probably the worst kept secret in all of MMA. The chatty challenger has made no bones about his intentions on having “The Spider” stare up at the Oracle Arena ceiling throughout their August 7th match-up.
Silva’s thought process, on the other hand, is the true wildcard in this showdown. Will we see the same striker that embarrassed Forrest Griffin like an amateur sparring partner at UFC 101? Or will the same disenchanted champion that’s unloaded three consecutive lackluster title defenses rear his ugly head again?
“I really don’t care who it’s going to be. With this fight with Chael and Silva, honestly I like Chael as a person,” Marquardt openly admitted. “I think he’s a good guy. In that respect, I hope Chael wins. But as far as who I’m fighting, I don’t really care.”
Marquardt’s first priority of business is ground ace Rousimar Palhares. The two will collide in a pivotal 185-pound affair at UFC 118 on August 28th.

I like Nate, and think he'd beat Sonnen in a re-match, and I think Nate now has the skill set to give Anderson a much better go than the first time around.

I don't think Chael can win by laying on Silva. It's not like Silva has no submissions...

I don't think Chael can stop Silva, although if anyone can hold Silva down for 5 rounds it's definitely Chael Sonnen. That being said, he has notoriously poor sub defense.

Chael's only hope is to wear Anderson out through repeated takedowns and forcing Silva to work for position. If Silva got tired from dancing and playing around with Maia, a 5 round war that finds him constantly dragging his ass off the canvas will most assuredly wear him down.
If Chael can get him tired, he can win the decision. If Anderson doesn't clean his clock first, that is.
I'd like to see Marquardt/Silva II. I think Nate has the tools to get the job done this time.

Marquardt is a stand up dude, I respect his opinion but he isn't really saying anything any of us didn't already know or hadn't already discussed previously. I think if Silva wins then Nate is goin to get to look forward to havin nap sometime during the middle of the 2nd round of a potential rematch. If Chael wins then I think Nate has a chance to take the strap, but then again Chael will be ridin some sort of epic ego wave, the likes of which we haven't seen before, comin off a win over 'The Spider' and is more likely to smash Marquardt.
Simply put, I think Nate has a bleak future in the MW title picture, at least for the foreseeable future.

lol i dont see how Chael is going to "hold SIlva down for 5 rounds" when his takedowns were basically half hearted and telegraphed heavily thanks to his fatigue, inside 3 rounds.. 5 rounders sometimes make cowards of people

Even though he can't finish them he deals damage, and I don't think Silva is good enough on the ground to shake him. The fights recently he's won by submission was the triangle against Lutter and the RNC against Hendo. That being said, Lutter was dead tired when Silva triangled him, and Hendo is not very good on the ground. I can't see Silva getting the upperhand on the ground against Sonnen, and I can't really see anyone in the MW division being able to escape Sonnen's wrestling. Sonnen is a boring one dimensional fighter IMO. But I think right now, his ability to take people down and hold them down is better than Silva's ability to make something happen off his back. If Silva can stay on his feet he'll win it but if not, Chael will smother him for about 22 mintes.
