UFC Lightweight Champ Frankie Edgar Suffered Staph Infection Prior to BJ Penn Fight
Written by Tom Ngo
August 12th, 2010
You know what they say about excuses, right? Well, reigning lightweight champ Frankie Edgar apparently had one to offer up, but opted not to after thoroughly trouncing former king BJ Penn to capture the title at UFC 112.
According to Fighters Only, Edgar was diagnosed with a staph infection shortly before their April 10th scrap, but was deemed healthy enough to fight.
This is the first time this information has come to light. A person close to the champion relayed the news to the popular MMA magazine, however was initially reluctant for it to become public knowledge. After some careful consideration, the “impeccable” source allowed FO to move forward with the news, as it would provide great promotional content for their rematch at UFC 118.
Speaking of pre-fight illnesses, Penn’s longtime coach, Rudy Valentino, informed CagePotato.com two days after the upset loss that Penn was “battling a sinus infection and was on antibiotics, so he was not 100%” leading up to their 5Round affair. However, he immediately followed that up by claiming it wasn’t an excuse, but he was just stating “what happened.”
Shortly after Valentino leaked his client’s condition, Penn was bombarded with backlash from fans thinking he was searching for an out instead of being gracious like he is after winning fights.
Word from the mainland must spread quickly because the Hawaiian vehemently denied that he wasn’t at his best in Abu Dhabi.
“No, no, no I wasn’t injured. I wasn’t injured … I felt good for the fight and I just wish I could have put on a better show,” Penn sheepishly told Fighters Only.
The 155-pounders will headline UFC 118 on August 28th. The highly anticipated event will be jumping off inside TD Garden in Massachusetts, home of the 2010 NBA Finals runners-up.

Can't wait for BJ to do some trouncing of his own. He'll show this motherfucker Tom Ngo what a real trouncing is.

win or lose i hate when "injuries" and excuses come up after fights. Noone is truly 100% when fighting and if they are truly injured they should pull out.

Silva lame ass i'm hurt looks during the press confrence was laughable. sry to rant kinda off topic!

there is a difference in saying no one fights at 100% (which is true to an extent, taking into account minor aches and pains) and a fighter being sick or injured to the point of not being themselves. bj nor anderson looked like themselves from the start. before any punches even landed. anyone who watches mma on a regular basis can see that and understand that.
anyone saying other wise is just hatin cuz no one likes an excuse. you want to talk about exuses look at titos fights against forrest. he always has an excuse, but he looks like the same fighter at the start of the fight. bj and anderson did not
bj - the way he walked in and not hitting himself in the face at the start of the match looked slow and sluggish
anderson - no dancing around, no head movement what so ever, movement wasnt as fluid.
you can hate all you want but come on people...........

He was deemed healthy enough to compete. More then that is just talk. Win or lose, if you enter the cage/ring, you and you alone are responsible for your condition. Frankly, I could care less what injuries fighters carry into the ring. I have a lot more respect for guys like rich franklin, who broke his hand in the first round of the david louiseau fight, and still put on a clinic. Now thats tough.

you can hate all you want but come on people........... | Yep. Also, further evidence about Anderson having injured ribs was that he didn't slap on his usual body triangle from bottom position like he always does in every fight prior. Eventually, he did but he didn't keep it for long (probably because a body triangle puts tremendous pressure on your ribs).
I want to see BJ and Anderson both lose (I think they're both arrogant pricks with huge egos) but I want to see them beat fair when they're at 100% (or whatever passes for "100%" these days...LOL).
Oh and as for the argument that an injured fighter should stop the fight...honestly, in a good training camp leading up to a fight, it's very easy to get injured. If that happens and every fighter were to bow out, we'd have main card disasters. I'd rather see SOME fights continue with injured participants than a good card turn to shit a week or two prior (maybe even less).
It seemed not to long ago that we were seeing threads here about "cursed UFC events" and shit with tons of fighters bowing out.
