Gray Maynard: “I Hope He Doesn’t Mess it Up, I Don’t Want Any Chips in the Belt When I Get it”

Although lightweight champion Frankie Edgar showed fantastic hands in his rematch against former king BJ Penn, top contender Gray Maynard is hoping they are just as good outside the Octagon. Specifically, in how he handles the hardware.

“It was blinging, it was all shiny and stuff,” Maynard told MMAWeekly.com of seeing UFC president Dana White wrap the gold around Frankie’s waist. “I hope he doesn’t mess it up, I don’t want any chips in it when I get it.”

Prior to solidifying his spot atop the 155-pound mountain at UFC 118, Edgar knew that if he retained the strap, a familiar foe awaited after Maynard earned his next dibs status by dominating Kenny Florian earlier in the evening. After bumping his record to 10-0 (1 NC) against the former top contender, Maynard proved his time has arrived.

“This is the best time. I went through all the top guys. Nobody can say, ‘Oh he didn’t do this, or this.’ This is mine, I deserve this, I earned it,” Maynard emphatically stated.

Now that all dues have officially been paid, the Extreme Couture trained fighter is looking forward to a repeat performance of his lopsided win over Edgar at “UFC Fight Night 13.” Although he owns a convincing win over the reigning champ, he isn’t about to unleash a Chael Sonnen-esque verbal assault on the man he steamrolled just two years ago.

“It’s great competition. He trains hard. He’s a cool guy too. It’s cool because his dad is always like ‘Hey Gray!’ talks to me and stuff; nicest guy in the world,” Maynard said. “So trash talk ain’t gonna happen. But I guarantee you he’s going to train hard, and I’ll train and it’s going to be a good fight.

“It’s all business. Throw the trash talk out, it’s just all business.”

According to the trusty rumor mill, late 2010 or early 2011 have been pegged as possible landing spots

Wouldn't be surprised to see this fight piggyback it's way onto GSP-Koschek II.

Gray is very cocky and runs mouth in a very annoying way. He is not funny, he is just very annoying. I hope Frankie beats the hell out of him.

Well even if u become champ Gray, no one would notice...u LACK personality and excitement...u cant bring in record breaking ratings on FIGHT NITE cards, what do u expect to do on a PPV card?

on mma live they said theres a good chance it goes on the new years card with silva sonnen.

frankies gotta learn how to promote himself hes really not that boring of a fighter. he couldve have ko'd some people with some of the shots he hit bj with.

I wonder If Gray's going to bring a blanket and a Pillow into the cage....25 minutes is a long time, I'd want him to be comfortable on Frankie's chest.....

I think Grey will be the mot hated champion in the history if he wins. I prefer Tito as a champ then Grey, at least he knows how to finish a fight. This fight will be desided in round 1&2, which sucks. If Grey can get the TD, repeat the TD, then its game over. Unless Edgar can get up right away I think it will be a done deal. I REALLY hope Edgar can stuff his TD's and pummel his face.

Has anyone noticed that fighters who train out of Xtreme Couture seem more prone to getting the descision then a finish?

A little bit yeah. I certainly don't argue with their training methods or hell even that they have conservative gameplans. I really only have issues with it when it they don't continuously go for the finish.

What does any of that have to do with being the best fighter in the world in your weightclass? I mean, if this is like pro wrestling, where everything is about ratings, then fine, lets look at who has the best angle and mic skills....but this is fighting. Its supposed to be ULTIMATE fighting. Championship implying that competition should be the priority...... not entertainment.... ask gray, he'll tell you

Maynard is the new face for Tampax in the LW division. Frankie will dispose of this douche once and for all soon enough.

I understand it is going to be hard to hype a fight with this tool, so he is running his mouth, but he is just not like a Chael where he can make it a bit amusing. He just comes off like a drunk fool.
