- IS CERRONE VS. VARNER 3 AROUND THE CORNER?
Friday, October 01, 2010 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com
Much like fans that watch Ohio State and Michigan go at it every year in college football, or Yankees and Red Sox fans battling it out during the baseball season, just about every person who loves sports loves a good rivalry.
In MMA, there may not be a more heated rivalry that Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone and Jamie Varner, who put chapter two of their epic hate-fest to bed on Thursday night. Cerrone came out on top this time, avenging an earlier loss to Varner from 2009.
Just seconds after the fight ended, Cerrone turned to Varner and gladly offered the former WEC lightweight champion a third fight, this time heading to his home state of Arizona.
"Jamie, you asked for a rematch in Arizona, I'd be much obliged to give that to you," Cerrone said after his win.
The Arizona event set to go down on Dec. 16 will be headlined by two title fights, including 155-pound champion Ben Henderson defending his belt against Anthony Pettis and bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz facing Scott Jorgensen in a 135-pound title showdown.
Adding Cerrone vs. Varner 3 to the card would be like throwing gasoline on an inferno. WEC General Manager Reed Harris admits that he'd love to see the two rivals go at it one more time.
"I'd have them fight every show," he commented after Thursday’s rematch. "The way these guys fight, I'm telling you that was an absolutely outstanding, exciting fight, and I'd love to see it again."
With approximately 10 weeks to go until the December show, it's possible that both Cerrone and Varner could be ready to fight again, health permitting of course. Varner seemed up to the challenge on Thursday night.
"Arizona is my hometown, gave you guys one hell of a fight here, I wouldn't mind settling the score there," Varner stated.
With the series tied at one fight each, a rubber match seems like a lock down the road. While no fight may ever truly settle the dislike between Cerrone and Varner, both would jump at the chance to punch each other in the face again.
The WEC has always been fairly non-committal following a fight, but Harris says he will talk to their matchmaker and see if the fan's dream third fight could become a reality sooner rather than later.
"I'll sit down with Sean Shelby next week and we'll talk about it."

I'd watch another fight between them two. Who else could either fight to make it relevant?

Varner isn't busy enough to beat Donald. I'd watch a third fight if only to see Cerrone put a stamp on this.
Oh, and even though this fight was pretty one sided, it was very entertaining. Cerrone does look better when he's facing an opponent he doesn't like.

Varner got his ass handed to him in both fights, the only reason he was able to survive the first beating is because he was too tired to continue so he used the accumulating injuries that Cowboy was giving him as a way out of the fight. He was broken and out of that first fight and would of eventually succame to the pressure. Last night only proved that.
I hope they don't even bother with 3rd fight, I honestly think Cerrone is a waste in WEC anyways. Varner is never going to be elite again with the likes of Cowboy and Henderson running things, and Henderson be tearin up everyone, so I say send Cowboy up to the big leagues and see how he does. The worst that could happen is he gets demoted back to the WEC.

I sort of agree to an extent about the fight the other night. Varner got beat but not beat up IMO. It was pretty clear that when Varner landed the right hand, Cerrone was hurt. Especially in the third round. Cerrone may have a personal issue or score to settle, but like I mention in the original thread, he needs to respect his opponents boxing. If he continues to fight like that he will be the Liddel of the LW division soon. He needs to protect his head, chin and jaw better. There are ways to fight a guy you dont like and still avoid major strikes. Even with his takedowns, he couldnt muster the strength to get under Varner for the second half of the fight. He has alot of work to do. And IMO if they met for a third time, I think Varner would knock him out.

my source says it's a done deal...I don't think it warrants a 3rd fight but from a marketing point of view it most definitely does. It will be in Varner's back yard and he, somehow, does have a lot of fans.
I just think ANOTHER win over Varner won't do much for Cerrone and there's no reason to have it so soon. I mean, Varner will probably go back to trying to wrestle Cerrone who has gotten much better with his TDD and the fight most likely will go the same way. In fact this time I am betting on Cerrone TKO R1.
