California commission to hear Chael Sonnen's drug-test appeal on Dec. 2 | MMAjunkie.com

Chael Sonnen will go before the California State Athletic Commission on Dec. 2 in Sacramento to appeal his failed drug test.

That's according to CSAC Executive Director George Dodd, who today confirmed the appeal hearing with MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com).

Sonnen failed a drug test in August as part of a UFC 117 submission loss to middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Sonnen tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, which according to a subsequent CSAC statement, is "indicative" of steroid use. CSAC officials issued Sonnen a one-year suspension and $2,500 fine in the wake of the test. He had a 30-day window to appeal the ruling.

According to Dodd, Sonnen was flagged first on Sept. 2 after an initial test revealed the presence of a performance-enhancer. A second, more-rigorous test conducted at the UCLA's Olympic Analytical Laboratory confirmed the results. The laboratory is used by the U.S. Olympic Committee and is the world's largest World Anti-Doping Agency-certified facility.

Sonnen has requested documentation from the test, including all relevant info from the WADA lab, for the Dec. 2 hearing.

The CSAC will assign someone to represent its interests at the hearing, according to Dodd.

Sonnen delivered a nearly note-perfect performance at UFC 117 and dominated Silva for four-plus rounds before falling prey to a Hail Mary triangle choke from the champion in the final moments of the fifth and final round. After much speculation as to both fighters' next move, Sonnen was earmarked for a rematch in early 2011. However, since news of the failed test, Silva has been slotted to fight Vitor Belfort, possibly in February at UFC 127.

Sonnen was expected to break his silence this past week on ESPN's "MMA Live" show, though he pulled out of the appearance on the day of its taping.

The underlined does not look good for Chael. I think he his toast on this one, and the appeal will be rejected. The suspension will stick and we will not see Chael for a year...

Who knows maybe in a year he can figure out how to get out of a Triangle!
