There is not much room for a feeling out process unless you call the first 90 seconds of a MMA fight a feeling out process.

Aldo's mental weaknesses are already showing just by how he talks in interviews lately and I don't care if everyone on here disagrees with me. Hes not top 15 P4P, he is a talented fighter with miles of road still ahead of him and he is already talking in ways that Fedor / GSP / A Silva NEVER do but have earned the right to if they so choose. I was a big Aldo fan and I still enjoy his fights but I am going to stay clear of the bandwagon before it incinerates, just like I did with Machida.
I didn't mean that you should throw the first round and neither did Aldo. I meant that sometimes it's advantageous to semi sit back in the first round and see what your opponent has to offer in order to figure them out.

I agree with your assessment of his P4P standing though. He has looked great so far but has yet to consistently prove himself against top flight competition.

I agree with you man. Just because Machida lost his title to Shogun doesn't mean that we shouldnt still respect him as a great fighter. If Aldo lost his next fight, it wouldn't mean I respect him any less, as he's still an amazing fighter, and definitely (IMO) a top 5 P4P fighter.

hahaha what are you talking about?? The man is on an 11 fight winning streak and has beat everyone the WEC has put in front of him in devastating fashion. Who else does the guy have to beat in the division to prove himself? You just can't please some people haha

Testing your opponent in the first round to see how they react and what kind of attacks they like to make so you can exploit an observed weakness has worked very well for lots of top fighters. Questioning the strategy Aldo has used to beat almost every top FW in the world based on almost nothing is pretty ridiculous. It's basically the same strategy Anderson Silva has used to be the most dominant fighter in the UFC as well.

The guy has crushed the competition in his weight class. WEC has arguably the most talented FW's in the sport and he's taken them out no problem. The only people really left for him to fight in the WEC are Josh Grispi (IF he wins his next fight) and possibly Mark Hominick. Chad Mendes has done well recently, but poses no real threat to Aldo and and once again needs to win his next fight in order to prove where he is in terms of contention.

So with the next FW contender pretty much being a cluster fuck and Aldo already beating the top dogs in his division, in arguably the best organization in terms of FW competition, I think it would be safe to put him in top 5 P4P rankings.

WTF are you talking about, you've never heard of feeling out your opponent? You've seen a lot of great fighters over the years do that and it is a common tactic for some fighters in almost any form of martial arts. get their timing down, find weak points in their defense, learn some of their tendencys, get their movement down and find your range. Aldo didnt lose the first round and only an idiot would think that, manny flapping his arms around and connecting with air, and aldo landing some very good kicks.

I think it was misunderstood what he said. He never lost the first round, but he didnt go to finish in it and he used it to feel manny out. We've seen him win every witch way. He can come out and destroy somebody fast in the first, he can dominate the entire fight, and he can feel somebody out before he finishes them. He can just go out and destroy people but that is when mistakes are made and when upsets happen, when you throw caution to the wind no matter how skilled you are. Fell the fighter out and attack when he leaves himself open.

look at anderson's fights with franklin, irvin, and forrest, he doesnt take the full round, but he doesnt come out ultra aggressive and he gets their timing, and movement down. Especially against forrest, he just clowned him with his hands and he had irvins movement down, moved with the kick, caught it and landed a great right.

I did give the first round to Manny.

Manny did a great job and gave Aldo a harder time then anyone else has so far.
