If you believe Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz, the glitz and glamor attached with being a professional mixed martial artist does not include a bankroll. According to the controversial slugger and habitual marijuana puffer, he’s dead broke and will do anything for some dough – including being “nice.”

“People need to understand that I don’t make a lot of money. For real,” Diaz told The Shoot. “I spent all my money on food. I don’t have any money. I spent it all on food. I didn’t buy anything.

“I worry about taxes and I watch my bank account just, WHOOSH, get sucked away. So I’m like, man, I just want to fight and get paid.”

Diaz reportedly pocketed $100,000 for his win over Marius Zaromskis at “Strikeforce: Miami” earlier this year. That does not include any additional sponsorship dollars he took home for headlining the Showtime broadcast, which often overshadow MMA fight purses. Considering the median income in the United States for 2010 was only $49,777, Diaz clearly bought far too many bud brownies if his bank account is on red alert.

“I’ll act nice, whatever, you know? Like I said, if I’m paid to do that, just let me know that’s what I need to do to play the game,” Diaz said of his dire state. “What’s the game? Tell me what I’m supposed to do. What’s my job description? I thought I’m a fighter, so I just kept it real like I always did.”

Thankfully, Diaz’s next payday comes this Saturday and he’ll FINALLY be able to make ends meet once again. Medical Marijuana clinics across Stockton, California are anxiously awaiting his arrival.

But in all seriousness the sad thing is, the Nick Diaz we see inside the cage is soooooo talented and filled with such promise, that he should be on pace, IN THEORY to earn a massive amount of money in this business. I fear however, that he's got so many personal issues which will potentially hinder that moneyearning potential. He's such a massive risk to ZUFFA to invest the type of mainevent money into that I don't know if he'll ever do his skillset justice....

Is anybody else confused about this? He made around 100 G's against Zaromskis, and who knows what he made against Sakurai, but that it A LOT of money to waste...How exactly does one waste all that money???

why does every writer talk about his bud smoking. ok we get it diaz smokes pot but really find something else to fill in your articles. we dont need to be reminded that he smokes tuff we all know that.

Maybe he just lives outside his means. Maybe he bought a mansion he couldn't afford; who knows?

Far too many people who have the financial means to live comfortably for life, end up with nothing to show for their hard work.

My wife and I don't have particularly lucrative jobs, but we'll still retire as millionaires with no consumer debt or mortgage payments

horrible article!!!! who said he spends all his money on weed??? since when does somebodies GUESS on how he spends his money count as fact??? i read an article in one of the fight mags that he pays for all the young fighters on his team's medical exams for there fights. maybe his accountant is ripping him off?? or one of a million other things.. who knows?? stupid article.
