The announcement of the merger between the UFC and WEC was less than an hour old when the news came down that Jose Aldo will be the first of the newly renamed UFC champions to put his belt on the line.

During a conference call to formally announce the merger, UFC president Dana White confirmed that Aldo would defend the featherweight championship at UFC 125 on January 1.

White didn't name a challenger, saying that the promotion is still working on an opponent, but he sounded definitive of Aldo participating in the annual New Year's weekend event. The Jan. 1 card will also mark the first time the UFC and WEC are merged, as the WEC will have two more shows before it is absorbed into its larger, sister promotion.

The dynamic Brazilian star has mowed through opponents in the WEC, winning all eight of his bouts. He captured the featherweight championship in Nov. 2009, and has successfully defended it twice, most recently knocking out Manny Gamburyan at WEC 51 in September.

Aldo (18-1) was recently offered a chance to move up a division to compete as a UFC lightweight but turned down a bout against Kenny Florian. Now, he'll be in the UFC as featherweight champion.

Among those likely to under consideration for the bout are Josh Grispi, Chad Mendes and Mark Hominick, though with the merger, it is certainly possible that a UFC lightweight could move down a division to challenge Aldo

great.....will this mean more UFC cards or less fights for the WEC fighters? The UFC needs a weekly or bi weekly show for these fighters to start getting paid and getting some exposure....maybe this "network" will provide that opportunity....

i was gonna start this thread like 3 hours ago but i was too lazy.

so i wonder who is gonna face aldo? if its not too short notice for a fw title defense (in other words, 2 months to prepare for jose aldo) why is it too short notice for cain/dos santos? they're just throwing someone to aldo for shits and giggles.

btw, who even deserves a shot? i hear the likes of hominick, but he lost to grispi who is still undefeated so that wouldnt be very fair...

They ought to have Tyson Griffin move down to face him.

are you serious? chael go from 185 to 145...you gotta be high

anyways cards looking good.
main card
maynard/edgar
aldo/tbd
guida/gomi
vera/t.silva
leben/stann (if the dui doesnt scratch this match)

if the leben/stann fight doesnt happen i would bump up the n.diaz/dong kim fight to the main card

yea i would say grispi. with the win over hominick and the fact hes on a 10 fight win streak (only 3 in the wec), id say hes most worthy at this point in time. btw grispi is 14-1. he has a loss to henrique bilcalho. but still 10 fight win streak is impressive and that lone loss was back in 2006 so when/if this fight happens he wouldnt have lossed in 4years

or maybe chad mendes being 8-0 and 3 in the wec

ummm i think he was being sarcastic...if u took that seriously, u must be the one who's high :)
