Aldo vs. Grispi Targeted for UFC 125; Nelson Off Card
Posted by Ariel Helwani on 10/29/2010 at 12:39PM | Tags: UFC, UFC 125, Dana White, MMA, Jose Aldo, WEC, josh grispi
It didn't take long for the UFC to start working on getting Jose Aldo his first opponent as an official member of the organization.
Versus.com has learned that the UFC is targeting a featherweight title fight between Aldo and top contender Josh Grispi. Contracts have been sent out to both camps.
Grispi was scheduled to fight at WEC 52 on Nov. 11, but if the fight goes through, he will of course be pulled from the card to compete against Aldo for the title.
The bout would serve as the co-main event of the evening behind the lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
The original co-main event was supposed to be Roy Nelson vs. Shane Carwin, but once Carwin pulled out due to a back injury, Nelson was pulled from the card.
When contacted by Versus.com, UFC officials would not confirm the finalization of the Aldo-Grispi fight, but did confirm that Nelson was removed from UFC 125.
The possibility of the bout was first reported by MMA.tv.
Mark Hominick had been rumored to be the next opponent to face Aldo, but sources say he won't be healthy in time to fight the champion.
Grispi, 14-1, has won his last 10 fights in a row, including four straight in WEC. Meanwhile, Aldo, 18-1, is coming off a successful title defense against Manny Gamburyan in September.
This fight would mark the first time a 145-pound bout would be contested in the UFC.
The event takes place on Jan. 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. It will air live on pay-per-view.

Man the thought of the PPV's with all these light guys on it makes me wanna scream. No more will we have two mid level WW's bump and grind for a 15 min decision be the piss break fight in the middle of a card, instead it will be replaced by a couple of high flying non stop action feather/bantam weight contenders. A day later and this merger news is stil just as sweet

So what's the hangup??? Its stupid that this fight isnt already signed.

Personally I'm a fan of Mir and Nelson but I don't like that matchup for Nelson, I feel Mir has better standup, equal Jits, and is in better shape, ill take Mir by UD
