| Mike Swick on Health, Possible Opponents, Weight Classes
Read the full article. There was a lot more about Swick's health problems, his weight loss, why he actually dropped weight classes, and insurance battles. Bit lengthy for the forum.
On health: Quote:
On Tuesday, Swick will undergo an experimental medical procedure to address his esophageal issues. The treatment will involve an injection of botox directly into the fighter’s esophagus in the hopes of weakening the muscles of the organ enough to reduce or eliminate future spasms.
“I’ve been afraid to eat food for four years because the spasms feel like heart attacks for two or three hours,” Swick said, revealing the extent to which the condition has affected him. “It puts a lot of stress and anxiety in your life, so it’s been a frustrating journey both in terms of my career and my personal life. It’s just been a nightmare so they’re going to paralyze the muscle to the point where, even if it spasms, it should feel better, if not be 100% fixed.”

“If you’ve seen any of my fights, especially at the beginning of my career, I’m not afraid of anyone and in most of my fights I’m the one who’s giving up the weight advantage,” Swick said. “After the fight against Yushin Okami, I weighed myself in the locker room and I was 182lbs right after the fight. I was losing a lot of weight and I wasn’t nearly as strong as I had been during my first four fights in the UFC. Even before I fought Okami I knew I would have to change something if I kept losing weight, so after that fight it was a good time to drop to welterweight. Anything is better than not being able to fight.”
| Future opponents: Quote: |
“[Carlos] Condit did an awesome job against Hardy,” Swick said. “[Martin] Kampmann, I felt bad about that fight [against Jake Shields] because he really went out there to win. He’s had kind of a rough go, but I think he’s one of the most talented guys in the division, and Diego Sanchez looked fantastic in his last fight. Paulo Thiago had a great first round and then Diego decided he wanted the win more. This is one of the times since my first few fights that I really have no idea who I’m going to fight.”
