AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Ultimate Fighting Championship's long-awaited return to Michigan proved a successful one.
Saturday's UFC 123 event, which took place at The Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit, scored 16,404 attendees and a 2.1 million gate.
UFC president Dana White announced the estimated figures in the night's post-fight press conference.
Official figures will be available in the coming weeks.
The event concluded a strong week of local coverage for UFC 123, which featured co-headliners of Lyoto Machida vs. Quinton Jackson and B.J. Penn vs. Matt Hughes. The arena was nearly at capacity by the time the night's untelevised preliminary card began.
By the time the Spike TV "UFC Prelims" special and pay-per-view main card kicked off, the arena was full.
The UFC's first and only other Michigan event came back in 1996 with UFC 9. The Detroit show drew an estimated 10,000 attendees.
"This place was rocking like we knew it would," White said.
White said he is pleased with the turnout for the event and that the organization "definitely" will make a return to Detroit. However, no exact timetable has been set.
