Default UFC 123 medical suspensions: Sotiropoulos and Lullo out indefinitely

UFC 123 medical suspensions: Sotiropoulos and Lullo out indefinitely | MMAjunkie.com

Quote:
The Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission issued five fighters from this past weekend's UFC 123 event medical suspensions, and two are out indefinitely.

Main-card fighter George Sotiropoulos and preliminary-card competitor Mike Lullo both must be cleared by a physician before returning to competition.

A commission official today confirmed the list with MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com).

UFC 123 took place this past Saturday, Nov. 20, at The Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit. Two preliminary-card fights aired on Spike TV, and the night's main card aired on pay-per-view.

Sotiropoulos submitted Joe Lauzon in a featured main-card bout. However, he took a poke to the eye in the fight and briefly was sent to the hospital after the show. However, in the night's post-fight press conference – though his left eye was a bit bloodshot – he said no permanent damage was done and that he expected no problems with it.

In fact, UFC president Dana White confirmed his next fight: a February matchup with fellow lightweight Dennis Siver at February's UFC 127 event. The show takes place in Sotiropoulos' native Australia.

Lullo, meanwhile, suffered a TKO loss to fellow lightweight newcomer Edson Barboza. Barboza's vicious leg kicks ultimately left Lullo unable to stand, and the ref was forced to halt the bout early in the third round.

Lullo must have his knee and thigh cleared by a physician before returning to competition. Even if cleared, he faces a minimum suspension of 30 days for precautionary reasons.

Other suspensions included:

Matt Hughes: Suspended 60 days with no contact during training for 60 days for precautionary reasons

Karo Parisyan: Suspended 30 days with no contact during training for 30 days for precautionary reasons

T.J. O'Brien: Suspended 30 days with no contact during training for 30 days for precautionary reasons

Some corners really need to learn when to throw in the damn towel. There is no reason why Lullo should have been out there for the third round and his corner should have recognized that their fighter was getting the shit beat out of him. Stupid corners waiting for the ref to stop the fight really bug me.

I also partially blame the ref in that fight because even a blind man could see that Lullo could not defend the leg kicks. That fight should have been stopped in the end of the second round to protect the fighter. No reason for it to go on.
