Overeem's only significant wins at heavyweight are Brett Rogers and Paul Buenotello. Hell, the best win of his career is Vitor Belfort who is currently a middleweight. Overeem is the one that's overrated and most likely on steroids. He hasn't been out of the first round since 07 and was knocked out by Sergei Kharitonov that same year. He's untested.
The man is an incredible striker, but he hasn't faced a high level wrestler in his entire career. Under the unified rules, high level wrestlers almost always beat high level strikers, which is why I think Cain, Lesnar, or Carwin would smash him. Fedor is well rounded enough to survive on the feet and outgrapple him. Hell, Josh Barnett could even grind out a decision.
Werdum's striking isn't great, but he was able to get a decision over Bigfoot and is the more well rounded fighter. If he can survive the first two rounds and apply pressure in the later rounds Overeem will fold. |
I dont think any intelligent poster on this board has claimed Overeem as a top 5 HW...top 10 maybe but he would be ranked #9 or 10 at best...
As for his best win, he has beaten better fighters than Vitor, who IMO is more overrated...he did beat Sergei too, which u forgot to mention, and that was when Sergei was legit HW himself
He may be on roids but he hasnt been proven guilty yet so you cant really make that accusation
I will agree about him not fighting elite wrestlers..but that's not his fault, as SF doesnt employ any top HW wrestlers, except Barnett, who I feel would beat AO...Fedor, Werdum, Silva will all be great tests for AO and I hope SF can make those matchups
