Fabricio Werdum vs. champ Alistair Overeem Likely for March Strikeforce | MMAFrenzy.com

Fabricio Werdum recently told Cage Potato that he expects to challenge Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem when he returns in March, with a planned rematch against Fedor Emelianenko on hold while the former top-ranked heavyweight continues to work on a contract extension.

Werdum (14-4-1) upset Emelianenko with a 69-second submission in June for his third-straight win, but hasn’t fought since after undergoing elbow surgery and had hoped for a tune-up fight before returning to Strikeforce action.

Overeem (33-11) is unbeaten in nine-straight bouts, including a May title defense over Brett Rogers, and will return to kickboxing action in K-1′s World Grand Prix in Tokyo on Dec. 11.

Hahahaha, that's going to be the usual road. I think Overeem would do it. Having Werdum in a tune-up is exactly the thing Strikeforce should never do with any named fighter. Tune-up fights are when an organization is trying to build a fighter, as the next big thing, how Jon Jones and Phil Davis are being built up, but not for a guy who is already known. Having their named guys fight bums is no way to keep fans watching. Strikeforce should never do anymore tune-up fights, because it ALWAYS comes back to bite them in the a$$

its true. and it WILL happen. in march. the catch is they are just saying march and left out the fact that its not until the year 2014

I'd love to see this match again, but kinda fear that Overeem's got soooooo much physicality on his side nowadays that he just tosses Werdum around and avoids the takedown by simply outboxing Werdum and not risking any legkicks to avoid the takedown. I love Werdum, but for somebody with legitimately shitty striking, going up against a juiced up K1-level striker just screams MDK. Overeem won't be arrogant/stupid enough to try Werdum on the ground after a knockdown like Fedor was and in turn, I see this getting ugly fast.

Personally, they need Fedor back in the main event because he's just such a massive star, but IF he fights Overeem and loses, then Overeem is now your number one HW and you have to go with him, which isn't a bad thing. He's got a milliondollar look, exciting fighting style and a personna that can sell tickets, SURE, there's always that risk that he blows a piss test, but at this point Coker and co are just standing aroud with their dick in their hands while Fedor decides whether he cares to fight once within anything resembling an 18 month calander, so it's kinda a push in a way. This fight only makes sense if the Farce in the meantime gives Fedor the much anticipated Barnett bout, otherwise, they're just wasting time.

Has anyone informed Overeem that he's likely fighting Werdum in March? Hopefully they've told him already so he doesn't book a match in K-1, JMMA or whatever else you can do rather than fight for the company you're champion of. Sadly, there is no one in SF for Werdum to have a tune up fight with since you don't want to risk your one shot at a logical title defense.

I cant see them letting barnett get cleared, he was on thin ice as is.And he pissed hot, AGAIN. but they let Ivel get a liscence so,who knows.

set a date and stick to it... announcing cards 30-45 days doesnt hype them up like they should. Ufc already has fights announced thru march as sf hasnt even broke into next months really
