Even though I'm not a big fan of his I'd have to go with Edgar. The guy came in as a huge underdog in his first fight with BJ (who many people believed was pretty far ahead of all the other LW's, at least in the UFC) and won a somewhat controversial decision, then came out and dominated in the second fight. Thats a pretty big year.

BJ Penn was thought to be not even contested in that division and was suddenly beaten twice.. i think that deserves fighter of the year. its like if GSP were to be beaten twice.. or if Chael beat Anderson twice (which i think is possible) i think the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions could be topsy turvey so equivilents dont exist there.... But there are definite runners up none quite like Edgar tho

Barely sneaking by on the cards and outpointing a poorly prepared Penn doesn't get you fighter of the year. No way I'm considering Edgar.
Certainly it would have been nice to see Overeem fight at least twice in MMA this year but you really can't knock the man's accomplishments in 2010.

Although I am a big fan of AO, I don't find his GP win all that impressive. He fought the smallest guy in the tournament in Sponge, a damaged Saki and then an old beat up Aerts. None the less, a he won all his fights and nobody can say shit. Fair and square.

I haven't yet seen a compelling argument as to why he isn't the FIGHTER of the year.
Love or hate him (RH), no one has come close to doing what he's done.
I am no fan and personally think his striking is amateurish. However, he holds a title in 2 major fight sports organizations in 2 separate sports. That's like any other champ winning ADCC and defending his title the same year.

Certainly it would have been nice to see Overeem fight at least twice in MMA this year but you really can't knock the man's accomplishments in 2010. | The first fight will always be debatable when it comes to the scores. But why hold it against Frankie Edgar if Penn was unprepared in their second fight? Penn should have known what he was getting into the second fight. Everyone knew what Edgar was gonna do and that was move in, attack and get out. Plus mix in a takedown here and there.
If Penn was unprepared for a rematch for the World Championship he felt he unjustly lost on the score cards to a guy that he knew the game plan of ahead of time. Then Penn would be the most pathetic fighter in all of MMA. His camp should have closed right away and he should have retired. But you know what I believe, I believe Penn was prepared for the second fight and Edgar just proved he was the better fighter. Deal with it and move on.
Edgar should be fighter of the year. He beat a guy that was considered unbeatable at LW and had tore apart every fighter he had faced up until Edgar. Say what you will about the first fight and argue about who won. The second fight left no doubt though that Edgar is the superior fighter. And honestly who beaten someone in the Top 10 P4P twice this year?
When it comes to AO, maybe Combat Sports Fighter of the Year. But MMA fighter of the year... no. In MMA he has what one win this year over Brett Rodgers. Sorry that does not cut it when it comes winning MMA fighter of the year. Not to take away from his GP win but its a different sport and should not be considered for any kind of MMA award.

Before Edgar, Penn was still in the top 5 on everyones p4p and Edgar dominated him in their rematch.
Cain beat a past his prime big nog and a soft fight for the HW belt. I didn't watch most of AO's K1 fights but I would still say its a no brainer that Edgar had the best year.

I am no fan and personally think his striking is amateurish. However, he holds a title in 2 major fight sports organizations in 2 separate sports. That's like any other champ winning ADCC and defending his title the same year. | For the record, I don't hate him. I just don't believe the hype. I don't consider his defense of the SF title worth a damn, as Rogers wasn't top 10, was coming off a loss which happened to be his first, and also happened to be a brutal KO. There were two fighters ranked above Brett [and ranked above AO as well] and he chose to take the easy road.
His K1 wins are great, but I didn't see him dominate any great, healthy fighters. I also wouldn't say it's the same as winning the ADCC as injuries in the ADCC are less common than they are for K1--K1 often has fighters win a Pyrrhic war of attrition, as Aerts did with Schilt. They win a GP round, but at the cost of later rounds in the tourney, because they're just too beat up.
I'm not saying he's not a great striker. I'm not saying what he has done in K1 should be entirely dismissed. I'm saying he never faced a great, healthy fighter for his wins. Werdum beat a healthy Fedor. Edgar beat a healthy Penn [at least, he beat him the second time, not the first] and Cain toppled lesnar from his throne of overhype. Pacquiao defended against Clottey and then moved up to beat Margarito...and he gets my vote, if I had to pick.
