| UFC 124: Josh Koscheck Suffers Broken Orbital Bone UFC 124: Josh Koscheck Suffers Broken Orbital Bone - Bloody Elbow Quote:
Josh Gross over at ESPN.com is reporting that in last night's main event at UFC 124, welterweight contender Josh Koscheck suffered a broken orbital bone at some point during the course of the fight. Given how swiftly Koscheck's right eye ballooned in the first round, it is likely the damage was sustained during that frame of the fight. The pain must have been severe as there were moments in between rounds where the challenger didn't even want his eye touched with ice or enswell.
This is why Joe Rogan's commentary that the ringside physician was interfering with a match that had every reason to continue is plainly irresponsible. Fighters are not the best stewards of their own health and wellness. Nor should we expect them to be. Ringside physicians who aren't the occasional buzz kill aren't doing their jobs. I shared Rogan's moment of potential letdown given the stakes of the bout and the seeming ability of Koscheck to continue fighting. However, shooing the doctor away because his informed medical opinion could leave fans unsatisfied or the match incomplete isn't responsible adherence to the "fighter safety" ethos.
Having your face broken can not only impact future training cycles and fights, it can functionally end careers. Here's hoping Koscheck has a swift and full recovery. Here's also hoping ringside physicians continue to make unpopular decisions in the name of fighter safety. |

Nice one. Gained a lot of respect for Koscheck in the way he fought and handled himself after the fight.
I knew Bob Sapp was a whiner but damn, Koscheck went 4 rounds with a broken orbital and Sapp dropped and cried aha.. I'm kidding, no disrespect. But Kos is a tough guy.
WAR GSP!

I'm still waiting for Koscheck's elaborate game plan to come to fruition?
Great satisfaction in the outcome of the main event |

It was much more satisfying watching GSP pummel Kos than getting a KO in the first 10 seconds. I wish that there was a bigger variety in strikes GSP threw but having a 25 minute stand up fight and having no risk to yourself is a insane accomplishment.

Fight should have been stopped. Hats off to Kos for not giving up, but Herb Dean should never have been involved while the doctor was checking Kos out, he couldnt see, putting him at great risk. With only one eye, he loses depth perception and cant properly defend himself.
Also,GSP did not look dynamic at all. He clearly had the advantage standing, but he was far to tentative, sometimes you need to take risks, and while GSP said he was going to finish this fight, he seemed far from that thought jabbing his way to a dec.

When you have found something in a fight that the other guy can not stop at all and you are dominating the fight with it, why do you need to take a risk? Why would he have to open himself up to possibly get caught when he is dominating what he's doing? He fought the style of fight that KOS wanted to fight and dominated him. I was very impressed with it. Kos said time and time again he wanted to bang with GSP and test his chin. Somebody should have told Kos how to defend the Jab!

My only hypothesis was he was avoiding Kos' (apparently) legendary right hand. Other then that, I'll say this was another good gsp title defense, and really proves that a good game plan works.

yeah Kos didn't have squat for head movement, just a busted up face to block the punches. Didn't even look to shoot in the last couple rounds. I'm glad he was alright with doing nothing to stop him from losing the fight. I was really hoping Kos would have wrestled GSP and forced GSP to finish him put the fire in his belly but Kos was content to tuck his chin and get punched in the swollen eye
