Default Discussion on "The Kick"

First, let me say that the Pettis kick was one of the most amazing and exhilarating things to happen in MMA in a long time.

What I would like to know is this: Do you feel that moves utilizing the cage as a springboard or leverage be made illegal.

Under current unified rules, "grabbing" the cage, running out of it, or throwing someone out of it are illegal.

First let me say, that was probably the greatest single move I've seen in MMA.

Secondly, good question.

After looking at it, I don't think the cage gave him an unfair advantage or gave him any more power behind the kick. So no, this was a one off move and don't see it happening too much in the future.

i really don't see why it should be made illegal. i mean how often is someone going to try jackie chan moves off of the cage, and how often is it going to actually land? truthfully i don't think the kick made it any more powerful had he just threw a hard high kick. i feel that if you get caught slipping like that, then... thats your bad. making this illegal would be retarded.

its different. grabbing the cage is to prevent people from stalling and preventing the other fighter from doing damage. and if you were allowed to go out of the cage and throw people out of it it would be more like the royal rumble then a legit sport.

I think it gave him an angle Henderson wasn't expecting but the cage would absorb some of the momentum of Pettis so the kick probably landed with less force than if Pettis had just thrown it straight from a standing position.

I don't think it should be illegal. Alan Belchar used it against Akiyama as a springboard into a right cross (might of been a stiff jab not totally sure) at UFC 100 as well. However I have NEVER seen anything even close to what Pettis did last night that was amazing.

To me, that was just MMA evolution in front of our eyes last night. 10 years ago moves like that weren't being taught in gyms, and the more developed the sport is, these are the types of results we are getting.

Wrestlers can use the cage to stack opponents (if they never had they cage they wouldn't be able to stack guys up and come down with shots), so agile strikers should be able to use the cage to perform strikes they couldn't otherwise

I understand what you are saying in this situation. Now, extend that to a superman punch. The leverage could be absolutely devastating. You could possibly even go further and state that it could increase the leverage in a key-lock.

Lol, I understand the intent of the current rules.

All I know is that kick should be made illegal simply on the basis that it is FAR to ballin for any cage to maintain
