He might be cheaper, but he sure as hell isn't more marketable. You can't market a fighter who would prefer to knock over cans in Japan rather than defend his belt.

And you can't market one who is pathologically afraid of piss tests.

That's coming from a perception that the belt means something. In a case where two--arguably three--of the fighters in the org are ranked above the maybe-I'll-defend-in-2011-maybe-I-won't champion, all concept of contendership gets thrown in the trash. Where the SF belt belongs.

No.

AO--at least in MMA--is a joke, and his belt is a joke.

The best thing Coker could possibly do is to lay down the law and say "I'm stripping AO of the belt. I'm having a HW tourney, it starts this day. If you want credibility, show up and fight, but I'm fucking done with divas."

And then actually hold all of his fighters to it, or tell them to fuck off.

But AO, as a champion, didn't beat a top 20 fighter to get the belt, he didn't defend it for 3 years, he ducked competition to fight cans in orgs that don't test for PEDs, and then finally defended against a guy Fedor had already brutally KO'd. He's not exactly marketable, and he certainly isn't credible.

He could be.

But right now...meh.

Actually, it is you that lacks credability due to your bias. Fighting Badr Hari twice, Crocop once when he was considered decent and some good k-1 fighters does not mean he is "fighting a bunch of cans". He is also not makretbale, yet he is 6'5" 250lbs of pure power. He is the hw kickboxing champion of the world right now who finishes almost everyone he fights in spectacular fashion. He isnt credible? Try and develop the ability see talent...before it is spoon fed to you. AO is a really good fighter. Get over it.

However, any and all legitimacy/marketability AO holds is quickly and easily removed the moment Dana White shows a clip of Chuck, Shogun, or Lil Nog whipping his ass.

I like the guy's skillset, but RH is right. He needs to beat SOMEONE. He has beaten EXACTLY 0 top HW fighters. 0.

His 2 best wins are against Rogers and Buentello.....

I would add that Rogers didn't even put up a fight. Overeem is going to have his backers simply because of his size and physique. Which, as most should know, doesn't add up to success in and of itself.

Sure, I lack credibility, I'm just a mope on the internet.

But at least I'm right, and you're full of shit.

In the post, I specifically point out that I'm talking about MMA. I understand he's a K1 champion--although you fail to point out that he lost to Hari once, and didn't have to face him this time.

In trying to build a case for him to be credible in MMA, you mention that he fought CroCop when "he was considered decent" and that he finishes everyone he fights in spectacular fashion. Sorry, but CC was no longer considered decent, he'd lost two in a row and needed knee surgery, and AO didn't finish him spectacularly. He didn't even hurt him, except the repeated knees to the balls that should have gotten him DQd.

AO is 6'5 of pure power. Pure power that refuses to take piss tests. Pure power that has never even faced a solidly ranked top 10 HW opponent in his MMA entire career, never mind beaten one. Pure power that ducked Fedor when Emelianenko first signed to SF, to go and fight dented cans in Japan. I'm not talking about Hari, I'm talking about Sylvester and Thompson.

And as I said...he could be credible. That's future tense, if he makes the right choices. Try to develop the ability to see through hype and focus on reality: He fought a not-even-top-20 fighter to get a sham belt for SF, he's fighting a not-even-top-30 fighter to try to get a sham belt for DREAM. Meanwhile, there are two or three fighters ranked above him in SF that he wants nothing to do with.

AO is an elite K1 fighter. In MMA, he's an entirely unproven quantity, and he's doing absolutely nothing to rectify that situation.

Get over it yourself.

That doesn't impress you? Roger's ran through Arlovski, and he gave Fedor a great fight, and then Overeem made him look weak and helpless, on the ground and on the feet.
